India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

Therein lies an opportunity to do value add at the source level. While cold storage is an obvious solution, for reasons of power shortage and lack of investment returns, private players are shying away. But what if SHG's can be trained to produce value added products at source? Instead of cultivating lemon, why not lemon soda or pickles? Like this jams, pickles, pastes can be easily made without any elaborate machinery increasing their shelf life and finding an immediate market

Today harvesting fruits & Vegetables happen with knowing demand and volume of supply going to be in Market, if supply is too much you see losses.
The only solution enabling technology. Teaching technology to each individual is impossible. What do in this scenario is that.
Require to ECO-System to integrate value chain
Famers (Link to) --> Farmer producer Company--> (Adopt) Technology --> (Does) Logistics --> e-Commerce --> Consumer

I think problem of losses in supply chain of fruits & Vegetables is due to gap in Demand and Supply.
This is not new to any industry when there is communication gap in demand and supply it introduce losses. It same for industry of automobiles as well. Today we have to book car in advance to get delivery 15 days to few months. What is logic behind that all manufactures want to produce car if demand is exists.

We can sell the excess food at cheaper rate in the localities where poor people use to live instead of throwing it in bins.It will help in reducing the loss because of excess farm product and will also help poor people to easily live their life.

since, FM have given some incentives wrt cold storage equipment's, things should be better . still, I firmly believe that Govt should put more focus on small town cold storage chains with time bound targets ( sq ft cold storage) to each of distt in India

Farmers should be advised regarding the acceptable level use of pesticides. This could help to avoid the export bans which are imposed on some of Indian harvests some times.Which also results in post harvest loss.

By providing more number of direct market opportunities to the farmers, the post harvest losses could be controlled. The Special Economic Zones should be provided with direct village vegetable and fruit shops in which the farmers could be able to sell their products directly.

Post harvest losses could be reduced at the harvest level itself if the problems of the formers are addressed. Sometimes the fruit variety which will give less post harvest loss could be the one which has high risks. For example, in banana we have multiple varieties.Among them Nendran Banana will not get spoiled quickly and is used to make chips as well. This one has demand in Kerala. But formers hesitate to cultivate them as that tree's height is more than other banana trees height which is risky
