India stands as one of the global leaders in the fisheries and aquaculture sector. The fisheries sector is a traditional sector yet an upcoming sector in India and identified as a ‘sunrise sector’. Fisheries and aquaculture are important sources of food production, nutrition security, employment, income generation, and foreign exchange for the country. India is bestowed with many water resources for fisheries such as ponds, lakes, tanks, rivers, and oceans for fishing. With various fishing technologies, aquaculture is now becoming popular among entrepreneurs.
The Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), the sector's current flagship program, has attracted the greatest investment in history. Various fisheries activities such as fish rearing in cages/ ponds/bio flocs/ RAS, mariculture, seaweed cultivation, ornamental fisheries, brackish and saline water aquaculture have gained traction under PMMSY giving sustained income and alternate means of income to many fishers, fisherfolks and others. Thus, with the welfare of fishers and fish farmers at its core, impactful projects are being grounded that are helping to enhance their income and improve their quality of living.
In order to recognize the achievements and futuristic view of the Department of Fisheries, Government of India, a Mascot Design Contest in collaboration with MyGov is being organized.
