महाकाल की महानता सर्वव्यापी है। इस भूलोक में महाकाल कहां विराजित हैं इस जिज्ञासा की पूर्ति के लिए वराह पुराण में कहा गया है कि “नाभिदेशे महाकालस्तन्नाम्ना तत्र वै हर:”। यह नाभिदेश उज्जैन ही है। उज्जैन का गौरव महाकाल है महाकाल की महिमा अपूर्व है। शिव पुराण के अनुसार द्वादश ज्योतिर्लिंगों में महाकाल प्रसिद्ध है क्योंकि वे स्वयं कालों के काल हैं। कर्क रेखा उज्जैन से ही गुजरती है, जिसके केन्द्र के रूप में कर्कराजेश्वर मंदिर विद्यमान है।
