India faces many natural hazards, including floods, cyclones, drought etc. But every hazard need not turn into a disaster. By careful planning, capacity building, early warning, community participation, procurement and pre-positioning of necessary equipment and resources, participation of civil society, assigning clear role to the private sector, involving panchayati raj institutions and urban local bodies, rigorous enforcement of techno-legal regime on land use and building regulations etc., significant reductions of losses can be brought about in such events. We have a national policy on disaster management, at http://ndmindia.nic.in/NPDM-101209.pdf

We have created a number of institutions by way of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, which may be seen at http://ndmindia.nic.in/acts-rules/DisasterManagementAct2005.pdf

What more can be done to enhance our preparedness to handle natural disasters?

As is the common saying that prevention is better than cure, we need to identify the causes for disasters i.e. natural calamities. Stringent laws need to be put in place to curb environmental degradation in the form of illegal sand mining, deforestation and clearing of hills. Secondly, efficient drainage system, as in Western countries, to be adopted in cities that are able to clear out heavy downpour, thereby preventing massive flooding. Thirdly, preventing overcrowding and illegal slums.

Hello
I want to give a suggestion. Don’t forget that we are Indian & we are the best in the world
So common India’s citizen this is the time, we have to prove that we are the best.
So, challo aaj hum sub milkar yeh wada kare , apne app se, apne desh se, ki humsub apna kam puri imandari ke saath karenga.
When we will complete our work with honesty so disaster become less automatically.
Then we would be able to face any type of problem (earthquake, tsunami, etc). I think this is the key to success in every field.

it is the growing tendencies among the fresh medical graduates that they are interested in basic medicaltreament every fresh medical graduate is having a passion to become specialist without undergoing the basic medical techniques majorty of young medical graduates are not well conversant with basic life saving procedures threfore there is acute shortage of basic medical aid providers perticularly in rural and remote areas so the best alternatve is to traine the available volunteers in basics

I have a opinion about preventing floods. Our honorable PM has emphasized on Satellite development since start. If there is any Flood in any state or city, with the help of satellite imaging the disaster management can learn how many areas are submerged, from where the water is entering, find low-lying areas which would be most effected. This information can be used to avoid further floods. In many states in India during monsoon season, there is flood. Every year.

I am studying in Roorkee. The Roorkee-Haridwar highway lacks dividers on the roads due to which many accidents happen regularly. The highway roads should definitely have dividers. This would reduce the count of accidents involving head on collisions.

In recent years big corporate are giving thrust to business Continuity Plans in event of disasters. I suggest Govt to urgently put in place Continuity Plans for each Govt departments especially Hosp, Police, fire stations etc. Conduct strict audits on compliance by them and regularly upgrade standards. In my personal opinion fast restoration of govt services after a disaster is equally necessary. Also been observed strong auditing mechanism help policy implementations.

schools have to be made to take up evacuation exercises at least during safety week every year in India. Children should be given drills in how to behave during evacuation in the midst of a natural calamity. We should not think that such a disaster will not happen to me or to this place. Hence workers, non teaching as well as teaching faculty, management staff, watchmen, kitchen people school bus drivers and gardeners shall be trained in responding to disasters.
