India faces many natural hazards, including floods, cyclones, drought etc. But every hazard need not turn into a disaster. By careful planning, capacity building, early warning, community participation, procurement and pre-positioning of necessary equipment and resources, participation of civil society, assigning clear role to the private sector, involving panchayati raj institutions and urban local bodies, rigorous enforcement of techno-legal regime on land use and building regulations etc., significant reductions of losses can be brought about in such events. We have a national policy on disaster management, at http://ndmindia.nic.in/NPDM-101209.pdf

We have created a number of institutions by way of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, which may be seen at http://ndmindia.nic.in/acts-rules/DisasterManagementAct2005.pdf

What more can be done to enhance our preparedness to handle natural disasters?

Before implementing CBDM it is important to know who in the community should be involved. The most vulnerable are the primary actors in a community. The focus
should be at the household level.

As a result many feel it is important to adopt a new strategy, which directly involves vulnerable people themselves in planning and implementation of mitigation measures. This bottom up approach has received wide acceptance because considered communities are the best judges of their own vulnerability and can make the best decisions regarding their well being.

Recognizing the need for vulnerability reduction for effective disaster management failures of a top down management approach becomes evident. This approach was unsuccessful in addressing the needs of vulnerable communities. Also better understanding of disasters and losses brings to light the fact that an increase in occurrence of disasters and disaster related loss is due to the exponential increase in occurrence of small and medium scale disasters.

Hello,
Firstly marked disaster prone areas. when we design any type of structure in such type of area then some point should kept in mind,
1. After compaction of earth for foundation speared loose dry sand particle before laying p.c.c.
2.low rise house design should be prefer in such type of areas.
3.As per law 200 meter clear distance for any campus from river side.
4. if campus is designed in hilly areas then it should be designed in such a way that it should not disturb the natural flow of rain water.
5.if a campus is designed in marshy area then the raft foundation should be prefer for foundation.
these are five technical suggestion which helps us to protect from disaster.

1.) Mapping disaster prone areas 2.) Create volunteer portal where people in 10km radius of disaster zone house/help disaster victims 3.) Ask medical colleges to create teams of better senior medical students which can be dispatched at disaster struck area ASAP. Training to civilians in prevention of post disaster transmission of disease, hygenie, survival tactics, also Tiss and other psychology colleges can create a senior students dispatch which can provide mental relief and hope to victims

our country faces disaster every year like flood, earthquake, tsunami etc. It is found that we cannot escape ourself from such disaster but we can prepare for it. for example the houses constructed by private builders are such that chajja comes out to the road and in case of earthquake these chajja falls on the road , so the govt should make madantory that all the bldg. structure should be designed by architect and cross signed by private authority like TCS, or another such company.

I think disaster preparedness should be included in day to day activities. If we have whole structure of the services based on ITIL framework, we could have all possible answers for any disaster. I work in 24x7 process (Application support) and have idea that if we could have any repeated offences, we should document every steps need to be taken and follow same procedure everytime with RACI mode of steps. If all processes takes place based on incident priorities, it will be too easy to work on.
