India faces many natural hazards, including floods, cyclones, drought etc. But every hazard need not turn into a disaster. By careful planning, capacity building, early warning, community participation, procurement and pre-positioning of necessary equipment and resources, participation of civil society, assigning clear role to the private sector, involving panchayati raj institutions and urban local bodies, rigorous enforcement of techno-legal regime on land use and building regulations etc., significant reductions of losses can be brought about in such events. We have a national policy on disaster management, at http://ndmindia.nic.in/NPDM-101209.pdf

We have created a number of institutions by way of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, which may be seen at http://ndmindia.nic.in/acts-rules/DisasterManagementAct2005.pdf

What more can be done to enhance our preparedness to handle natural disasters?

national de worming- you have so many medical colleges, nursing colleges making money freely, put some cess in the form of adopting few villages , taluks for implementing these kind of programmes.

With a couple of days for swami vivekanandhas birthday, who said give me ten strong men I will build a new India, its time we put our hands up first to iniciate it. My first suggestion for disaster Management would be it should be a subject in schools & colleges with mock drills on a monthly basis depending on that particular districts needs of disaster management & to involve women namely the self help groups, for there is a group existing already.I do have a comprehensive model as well.

RANDOM SATELITE WATCH DRILL IN CERTAIN AREAS WILL HELP PREPARE FOR DISASTER.
PREPARDNESS FOR USE OF 'DRONES' TO REACH INSIDE ACCIDENTAL SITE MAY IT BE ON LAND OR UNDER WATER WILL PLAY IMPORTANT ROLE IN TAKING CARE OF DISASTERS.

layman should no about prebventive measures of natural disasters, each and every place should have disaster management authorities at diff levels.... mangrove plantation at coastal belts and cause afforestation is prime step

Yestarday me and two of my friends were talking to each other on roadside(we were three, two boys, one girl). Two policemen came and abused us. They let the girl go and took both of us to the police station and treated us like criminals. In the police station they said that ''tum teeno kitni der se baat kar rahe the aur sab ladke tumhe dekh rahe the''. So if i am just talking and people are looking at us that means we are criminals and the one's who are watching are innocent people.The time when they caught us was 3:00pm in the afternoon and we were not doing anything. I am still afraid to get out of my house and meet my friends. Am i living in a free, democratic country ?
