What is wrong with our parking system? ...

What is wrong with our parking system?

Subsidized-modern-hi-tech parking is an oxymoron

Chandigarh car density is highest in the country with 227 cars per 1000 people, but the parking rates that are one of the lowest in the country (Rs.5 for car and Rs. 2 for scooter/ bike). This in fact lies at the root of the parking violations. The parking licensees don’t make enough money to invest in CCTVs, boom barriers and other hi-tech gadgets among other things. They also resort to unlawful means like overcharging, allowing more vehicles than the capacity, allowing other economic activities in the parking lot etc.

Equitable distribution of road space

There should be an equitable distribution of road space in the city. Currently 90% of the road space is taken by 22% of the population that owns cars. The pedestrians and users of non-motorised vehicles are squeezed out of the road because in the absence of cycling lanes etc, it is not safe for them.

What should we be doing instead?

Higher charges for parking spaces would even limit our trips by car. That would cut emissions, alleviate congestion and, as a side effect and improve land use. If the same land is given to the developers, the government can earn much more than it is currently doing. The higher parking rates can augment the city resources which can then be invested in road safety, building dedicated cycling tracks, developing green areas, developing vehicle free zones like European countries.

Cities like London, Milan, Singapore, and Stockholm have imposed congestion tax and made parking expensive. In Chandigarh, we still believe in cheap parking. But, there is actually no such thing as cheap parking. Somebody is always paying for it. In our case it is the city administration, but at what cost?

• Shouldn’t we invest more in public transport systems?
• Shouldn’t we develop more green spaces?
• Shouldn’t we have more dedicated cycling tracks and pedestrian walkways like Singapore and other western countries?
• Should we be really subsidizing the parking for the rich? National Urban Transport Policy talks about parking as a public service but the moot question is if it should be subsidized by the administration and that too for the people who are more than capable enough to pay for it? These are some of the questions which need more public participation and deeper deliberation.

Inflation: It seems mockery the statements given by the Government and the Reserve Bank of India indicating that the Inflation has come down. Probably they have not made enough survey and got the inputs from the Common man. The fuel prices are being reduced But has anybody cared to find out whether the benifit has reached to the common man. The transport charges remain the same and in some cases it has risen. The Govt should earnestly see that the benifits should be for the common man.

Public Transporation should be encouraged.ONE CAN ALSO START TIME BASED CAR PARKING CHARGES, THEREBY CHARGING HIGHER AMOUNT FOR PARKING DURING RUSH HOURS. This will automatically discourage majority from using cars during peak hours. The same system can be installed on streets which may be overcrowded during peak traffic hours.

Car should be used for atleast 4 peoples...less than 4 must use public transport..or chandigarh govt. should restrict cars for specific time everyday...in chaina, they made same rule to save petrol, environment and for low density of trafic..

transport system of Chandigarh is totally scattered. Availability of CTU bus is not as good as it should be of Smart city. Buses are not plying on their schedule. There is acute shortage of driver, conductor or buses.
monopoly system of CTU should be finish. Private or PPP MODEL should be adopted for better transport system.
there is no check on auto rickshaws. No boundage on them for following the rule and regulations. No meter system, THEY DEMAND huge fare, also not follow the traffic rules.

In Chandigarh there are many offices of Chandigarh, Punjab Haryana and PGI, PU etc. And timing of all the offices approximately 9 to 5. Which create a lot of traffic rush and TRAFFIC zam. So the timing of different departments should be different e.g. 8 to 4, 8.30 to 4.30, 9 to 5 and 9.30 to 5.30.
One more thing is that a common cab facility for same department and Office.
School and college students should prohibited to use vehicles in school or colleges.

SHRI MODI SAAB, I think we have to immediately follow-up the Quick arrangements for Perfect Parking system of Rectangular slots in all Our MAJOR CITIES and towns just like in smartest MEGACITIES across globe like VANCOUVER in CANADA & MELBOURNE in Australia. ALSO MY SUGGESTION is that PEOPLE should be given plenty of Parking areas near to any METRO TRAIN station or any local RAILWAY STATION and there by make smartest use of METRO TRAIN SYSTEM to go to OFFICE in the Morning to avoid any Hazzles..

One more important point i have observed that there is lack of parking sense in us, specially this has been found more in out of the state vehicles. As there is no such boundations there so its difficult for them to follow such regulations here in Chandigarh.

Why we don't even think of using Local transport?.Why should i take my car to go to my office?.Why to use the car when i am going to office alone?.The local transport system has to very very efficient so that i need not to drive my own vehicle. This is the only solution to all the problems like jams, parking etc.
