India has a long tradition of excellence in making handloom products with extraordinary skills and craftsmanship. 44 lakh weavers are engaged in this activity, out of which 78% are women.

By the Handlooms (Reservation of Articles for production) Act, 1985, the Central Government has reserved articles or class of articles for exclusive production of handlooms for the protection and development of the handloom industry.
Further to this effort, the Ministry of Textiles launched “Handloom Mark” scheme with effect from 28.06.2006 for promoting and preserving the Indian handloom products and securing a premium position in the domestic as well as international market. This provides a collective identity to the handloom products of India for popularizing the hand woven products originating from the handloom sector. Thus, the Handloom Mark does not necessarily guarantee a bench mark quality for the product, but ensures only the origin of the product.

Though the weavers produce rich variety of designs and textures, there is not much emphasis on the quality of the product due to various reasons. Experience of implementing Handloom Mark in the past years indicate that this has served the limited purpose of production of cloth by handlooms and not been able to address the quality related parameters which are integral for development of handloom as a niche product.

It is stressed on the need to produce a fabric “with no defect and no effect on environment” and develop “Indian Handlooms” brand for assuring quality products meeting social and environmental compliances.

worldwide marketing,as one of my friend said below tie up with flipkart ebay yupme alibaba,
India alone is a big market so along with make in India, do be Indian buy Indian products...for ex. if we buy micromax/xolo/indian brand instead of apple./samsung..import reduces and rupee value increases.

The mantralaya e-books recently released should be in Hindi as well. As of now only power ministry has uploaded in hindi. Also some ebooks are in flash whereas some are in PDF. It would be better if we are provided with pdf version so that we can easily download and share it.
Thank You

Using Mann ki Baat program, Mr. PM can inform the countryman about major & even minor initiatives started by government for the betterment of the Indian people. He should also inform about the progresses made on agenda set by government at the beginning of their tenure. This will lead to individuals feel that government is already working on it & by the specific time frame it will be completed. This will be useful for government also & it will have the impact on next election as well.

The Gandhi Ashram and state handlooms like U.P. Handloom or Upika etc. are the existing bodies to buy the handloom product but these are not successful as there is no advetisement on radia, T.V. or not even promoted by the state government by spread out hordings or documentaries. These products must be marketed by the government or give relaxation to weavers on radio or Doordarshan.

We can promote handlooms through advertising with celebrities. I think it is best way to promote anything. We have example of MODI KURTA, which becomes a Brand/Fashion now.
Today all old things of India are becoming more popular in other countries like people of Japan eats ashes havan.

Aggressive marketing is required for handloom products as swami Ramdev has done for yog and ayurveda. I think it is best strategy to connect people with it and collect a good fund from people and government to promote and market it.
