India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

If cold storage-based transport systems (trains with compartments having refrigeration provisions or vans/trucks will refrigeration) can be provided for transporting perishable food items, such as fruits/vegetables/milk products etc. to the nearest cold storage locations, it will decrease the rate of decomposition. Also if these cold storage facilities can be created in higher frequency, say one per district, they will decrease the time needed for transport.

I think, improving forward linkages at the farm level would do. e.g. involving private food processing companies would be a good solution. They should be encouraged to collect the fruits and vegetables from the farms or setup preprocessing centres at the village level. Cooperative institutions can also do it.

I feel that the best option is to promote fruits and vegetables marketing co-operatives in the lines similar to the ones in milk supply like Amul in Gujrat and Nandini (KMF) in Karnataka. Fruits and vegetables, like milk area also perishable goods and if milk can be supplied efficiently, even fruits and vegetables can also be supplied efficiently.

Respected PM,

Farmers may kindly be provided Road Transport buses from villages in the early hours like in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana States. Raithu Bazars,( for farmers to sell their vegetables) are also to be provided to sell the farmers vegetables and fruits without charging any amount in providing shops to sell their vegetables, lighting in night time. AP and Telangana States are already enjoying from 10 years or so under Agricultural Ministry. To be followed in other states also.

Create an eco system for Agro supply chain.
1.Create Agro grid by improving road connectivity and constructing sufficient low cost warehouses
2.Collect village/town level production and consumptions
3.Create a digital infrastructure where Post Office staff(they have last mile connectivity) updates daily prices in near by markets
4.Let villager or producer decides where to sell or store
