India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

REDUCE EXPORTS OF THESE FRUITS/VEGETABLES. FIRST MEET THE DOMESTIC CONSUMPTION. EXPORT OF THESE ARE GOOD ONLY TO THE MIDDLEMEN BUT NOT FARMERS WHO ARE NOT ABLE TO GET THE SATISFACTORY RETURNS. THE MIDDLEMEN ARE BENEFITING AT THE COST OF FARMERS.

To reduce post-harvest loses in supply chain of fruits & vegetables, there many measures. Among them some are as follows:- a) storage houses adjacent to concerned village should be made.b) Government should recruit a unemployed person to asset the data of unsold product and then administration should buy the fruits and vegetables in cheep price and store it in the concerned storage house. c) The storage products then can distribute across the country as per as demand.

THE ROLE OF MIDDLEMEN SHOULD BE REMOVED FIRST. THEY ARE THE PRIME CULPRITS WHO EXPLOITS THE WEAK BARGAINING POWER OF FARMERS. MARKET YARDS, RYOT BAZARS ETC., FACILITIES SHOULD BE INITIATED BY THE GOVT., ITSELF. STORAGE FACILITIES SHOULD BE PROVIDED AT RURAL AREAS. WHEN MIDDLEMEN ARE DOING IN PROFITABLE MANNER, WHY GOVT., UNDERTAKE THE MEASURES TO FACILITATE THE FARMERS.

Each village should become a part of one zone of that area. Each ten villages should produce similar vegetables inn each season.so that storage tempetures is well maintained and damage in cold storage is minimised.
