India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

In my Views, Govt. should start with an corporate based organisation under which the govt. should construct Best quality of Food Storages at least covering 500 villages by one storage facility, wherein the Farmers can store their product at very reasonable charges and that product could be brought into the market during the post harvest period. This will help the farmer to get better returns of their product as well as the product will be available in off season period in the market.

RTI Act ke tahat Rs.10/- ke jo IPO khridne ke liye kaha jata hai, use Post office se encash karane me Govt. ka kagaz ke sath sath time, kafi time aur paisa kharach hota hai, Mera Bharat Sarkar se anurodh hai ke iski jagah par Govt. Postal Stamps zari kare jiske upar "RTI Act Fee" likha jaye aur iski kimat Rs.10/- ho. Jisko RTI Act ke adhin suchna chahiye hogi, wo Rs.10/- ki ticket khrid kar application ke upar lagakar use concerned office ko submit kar dega. Govt. ko ek bar me paisa mil jayega.

At the initial stage, block level collection centre for fruits and vegetables be created where the growers can deposit their produce and collect money through bank transfer. These can be run by big chain stores or by co operatives, who will transport the products to cities and sell to retailers. The Railways can also be roped in to set up collection centers at certain stations and transport the products in refrigerated wagons to big cities.

To reduce the looses/wastage in the perishable products, we and our govt have to take some measure
> First of all we have to aware the farmers in the new emerging trends.
>Introducing COLD STORAGES at the gram panchayat level.(organised and operated by panchayats)
>interlinking of road for speed transportation(Need speed)
>Providing E-auctioning center at the doorsteps of farmer.
>we have to develop the solar powered coldstorages "GREEN STORAGES"(R&D have to improve this technology)

Direct selling by farmers & direct acquisition by consumers is the best way out to eliminate post harvest losses. By eliminating middlemen, handling, inventory etc consumers will save 15-40% and farmers will get 15-30% more. Prices will not fluctuate. Details of projected Direct Acquisition & Direct Distribution System are since submitted on this site as well as to concerned Ministries. On macro-n-micro planning, Groups of consumers & groups of farmers can be brought together & well connected.

1. Provide Containers and packaging materials for Farmers at subsidized rates to reduce damage to fruits and vegetables for transporting
For example, Plastic crates for Tomato ( Instead of using bamboo basket or Gunny bags)

2. Educate the farmer about Grading.. Or Establish grading facilities at Village or cluster of village level ( Rope in MNREGA workers)
Higher grades fetch premium prices. Provide incentive to graders

3. Design custom vehicles specific to particular fruits.
