Gandhi was a wise man who lived in a world that lost wisdom in the 2 world wars. Just think about these examples of what he said: 1) Civilization is the encouragement of differences. 2) No culture can live, if it attempts to be exclusive. 3) Action expresses priorities.

Swabalambi: Self sufficiency with home spun khadi or goods that India can manufacture in its own is a very relevant teaching of Gandhiji. The new slogan for the same is what our Prime Minister Narendra Modi named as "make in India" and indeed the initiative is going to be fruitful for India in days to come only if it is truly implemented throughout the country. What Modi emphasised now was long back taught by Gandhiji proving the relevance of his teachings in today's world.

You probably must have heard of Ben Franklin’s old saying “Early to bed, and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.” Gandhiji being a disciplined man always abided by this rule though he slept lesser than most people, requiring only 4-5 hours of sleep. There are many benefits of early to bed early to rise, both physically and mentally. Research has shown that people who sleep in time and rise early in the morning are also more successful and better in dealing with negativity.

It’s true that the food choices we make each day directly affect our health. Unhealthy eating, largely caused by bad eating habits, can lead to several health issues such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, etc. Gandhiji, who always professed the need for healthy eating to keep the body and mind in shape, experimented with various diets and practised self-restraint throughout his life.

Fasting, which was a potent weapon used by Gandhi as part of his philosophy of Ahinsa, has many health benefits – including weight loss, lower blood pressure and reduced cholesterol. It helps cleanse the stomach and get rid of toxins to safeguard against infections.

Mahatma Gandhi once said this, “It is health which is the real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver.” It’s so true that your health is your real wealth. But many of us spend our time and efforts pursuing riches at all cost while neglecting our health.

Gandhiji's teachings are as relevant today as ever. Every growing child should be acquainted with his life and times, his struggles to shape himself and his politics that so changed the way the world looks at things. For, as he maintained, his life is indeed his message.

Gandhiji was a votary of multi-religious identity. He said: "Even as a tree has a single trunk but many branches and leaves, there is one religion - human religion- but any number of faiths." He maintained: "The essence of all religions is one, only their approaches are different."
