LPG is one of the ‘clean’ cooking fuel with present consumer base of 17cr in the country and present coverage is 60% of the households. Government of India is committed to increase LPG coverage in the country to 75% of the household. Present, LPG distributor network has more than 17000 distributors spread having presence in both Rural and Urban areas of the Country. Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India is of the view that there is a need to increase of LPG coverage in the rural areas considering the benefits of LPG in terms of health and environment. Ministry recognizes that availability, accessibility and affordability of LPG are the key factors to increase the LPG coverage in rural areas. This can be done with bringing in new distributorships aligning with challenges encountered with respect of making them available to the last mile.

Therefore, Ministry solicits suggestions/inputs from citizens on the new model of distributorship particularly for the areas such as Hilly/Desert/Densely forested/other difficult locations. Also, to suggest names of locations which require establishing new distributorship.

The extant Guidelines for Selection of Distributorship is available on www.petroleum.nic.in

Sir, there still remain misgivings in the minds of many, especially rural folk who find LPG use difficult and consider it unsafe. Their doubts & misgivings will first have to be addressed and they need to be taught the proper use of LPG stoves. This can be done by street plays, through women self help groups, school plays and local dealers. Initial use in community kitchens & mid day meal centers can be started and once familiarity with LPG use is achieved, individual connections can be given.

Sir,I am a Commercial LPG distributor of M/s Indian Oil Corporation Limited, appointed at a semi urban area, where there is no viability for commercial LPG sales and suffering with accumulated losses. I have invested a huge money in this business to set up infrastructures. I requested MoPNG and IOC to allow me to supply domestic LPG also in & around of my LPG stockyard and it will ensure effective supply of LPG to consumers. As usual, the authorities not allowing me. Allow me to reduce backlog

1.annual limit of cylinders should be revised in order to reduce black market 2.to start new distributorships in hilly or any other difficulty areas, underground pipeline and some sophisticated technologies should be used and for this some engineers should be hired by distributorships

Sir, it is time to shift to piped - metered supply which will require one time laying of pipelines, regular service visits and off site meter reading. Transporting cylinders will be cumbersome & can be avoided. Central dealership with adequate - protected storage will serve the purpose, probably even covering adjacent villages. This coupled with solar power will go a long way in solving the energy needs of rural households.
