The Railways has huge amount of prime real estate in the cities and towns. At present there are encroachments on railway property. it is especially so in Mumbai. The encroachments on railway property can be cleared and can be used to build shopping complexes and hotels which will serve rail passengers and also other casual tourists thereby giving the railways a lot of revenue which can be used for improving the rail infrastructure/ for laying new tracks.
In our railway system, there are so many non busy routes which can can be utilized for goods movement by privatization. This will improve the revenue, maximum utilisation of routes.

Cultivate Jutropa (producing bio diesel, being used for diesel locomotives of railway) plant growth in massive scale in all states of India and make cmmercially vioable it to produce bio diesel for use of railway engines and gradually reduce purchase and use of petroleum dieseel for use of railway. This will help railways to check expenditure. Also give more stress in developing freight corridors in sufficent numbers in each state and give wide publicity to the bussinessmen of the country .
1. Bedsheets etc should be sponsered. On every bedsheet and pillows there should be advertisments.
2. Like toll plazs tickets, advertisements on Railway ticket back can fatch huge revenue.
3. Both sides of railway tracks there can be walls with paid painted advertisements. This will ensure safety also. If it is not possible hoardings can display along sides of railway tracks.
4. On every big stations tax free shops can be opened.
Instead of providing white linen and pillow cover to the upper class passengers we can sell a certain printable area of linen and pillow cover to some advertisers.
Definitely some people from textile industry/ e-commerce would certainly take this hand to hand .
Secondly as the train passes diff cities we can set up a profit sharing proposition with the local city vendors to supply on seat ,the delicacies of the city .
