For delivering various Citizen centric services and furthering the reach of Financial Services including Insurance, the Government of India has set up a Task Force to examine and recommend efficient utilisation and upgradation of the Post Office Network, enabled with Digital/Internet Connectivity to rural Offices and outpost areas enabling reach of different services in rural areas. This Network is also being viewed as a distribution channel to retail various schemes and services of Central Government, State Government and Private Sector Players.

Through this discussion the Department of Posts (Ministry of Communications & Information Technology) seeks suggestions on the following:

•    To provide efficient postal network and points of presence [particularly in rural areas and small towns] to Central Government Ministries / Departments, State Governments [including Local Self Government] and private sector players for delivering various citizen-centric services, scheme, products to the people.
•    To further the role of Post Offices in Financial inclusion, including Insurance products
•    The infrastructure requirements of the Post Offices and the Postal Network
•    To make the Post Offices financially viable

Last date for sending your suggestions is 30th November, 2014.

The First item to implement would be to revamp the look of the post office. The current post offices are falling apart and filthy. The post men and women do not have comfortable seats or working conditions. Consumers prefer to avoid post offices due to the filth. Moreover, the timings of most of the Post Office are not friendly to the common man. In order to leverage the PO network, you first need to make it appealing for people to want to go to the PO.

India has the largest Postal Network in the world. With 90% of POs existing in rural areas they can be integrated with the banking network as part of PM's JanDhan Yojana to help open bank accounts for people in rural areas. The postmen and postwomen could be leveraged for collecting money as they are the mobile work force. The very small and small investors can get access to banking and create savings/security for their families.

Indian Post is largest network in world, I think changes in Management & motivating existing staff can help..

- Postmans still serves on their bicycles, there should be a way to motivate them.
- Dress codes need to be well defined so people consider them to be reputable person in society rather than just "TAPALI".
- Indian post delivers door to door but don't have facility to collect it.
- DHL, TNT and other success private company's top management to be hired to see real change.

The India Post Office task force should be merged with "Digital India" initiative and India Post Office should be renamed as "Indian ePost Office". Today there are technologies available in the US where one can scan/digitize all post (Search for Outbox - Evan Baehr and Will Davis in Google) and customers would opt-in for their mail available online or through phone/SMS. India has very high density of mobile phone usage and this will save lot of money for Post Office and for end customer.

Indian post office have not been developed since indepence (might have but does not look so). We need to rebuild the entire PO and people need to be responsible and ready to take actions/results of the unit independently. Should be an independent unit as a profit/loss unit. Should tie-up with private retail companies(like amazon, FlipKart...) to deliver goods using the vast network of post office. This alone could be a billion dollar business. Technology should marry the vast network of post office and make it a profitable venture. Make people responsible for the profit/loss. Success and failure should be seriously taken with in the department and strict actions need to be taken.

Hi All,
There is so much we can do if Internet and India Post are brought together. For example.
1.Retail PO Box: Paid vaults facility with full security
2. Inclusion of Parcels/Courier services with tracking facility
3. Free Online account to all Indian citizens
4. Online schemes for savings like Recurring Deposits (Tax Emption included)
5. Ability to file tax and returns through India Post
6. Auction of Postage stamps and Coin collections
7. Online Money Ordey facility

. High Speed OFC cable connection to all PO to enable them as Electronic nerve Centre to connect urban and rural India for e-governance. 2. Establish ATM in every rural PO. 3. PO as an enrollment center for all government cards and schemes. 3. Sell PO Service to conduct surveys in rural India 4. Rebrand it as Courier Company with 24-48 hours package delivery in every corner of India. 5.Training and performance review for employees in every 6 months. 6. Sell positive customer experience.

Efficient usage of internet: I would recommend every individual post office having access to internet. There should be better user friendly tools for management of all the incoming/ outgoing packages, routing and tracking of packages. Better tracking should be accessible to general public.

All these would be useful only if the staff has sufficient knowledge on usage of the technology. They need to be trained.

PO website is the biggest thing to be developed. It should be simple and interactive enough for people to understand and track the letter and packages. Online services like,
1. International services
2. sell stamps online, envelope, gift boxes etc.
3. schedule package pickup and send at the door.
4. Find PO location
5. calculate price of the package.
6. REturn the mail, package etc
The most important thing is to create a brand. So people will want to work for PO and create a career.

1. Govt should make PO a company. Go to public and make an IPO. Get the money and start a company.
2. PO can also sell stuff like merchandise stuff like, PO magnets, India one magnets, tshirts, etc to create business.
3. The biggest thing could be to tie up with Amazona , flipkart etc.
4. PO can also sell various sizes of boxes to pack gifts or courier and send them.
5. ATM machines can be installed in the PO.
6. If there are any traffic violations(tickets) in future, they can also be paid.
