The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment (MSJE), in collaboration with MyGov, invites comments and suggestions from stakeholders and the general public on the draft accessibility standards for the Build Environment sector. These draft standards, which identify non-negotiable rules, have been prepared to strengthen the creation of barrier-free environments in accordance with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 and relevant rules.

Thank you for inviting suggestions. I travel with my elderly relatives sometimes and have noticed that public transport still lacks basic accessibility. Here are a few suggestions: 1. Buses and metros should have space for wheelchairs and low steps so that senior citizens or disabled persons can board easily. 2. Announcements should be both visual and audio – especially helpful for hearing or visually impaired people. 3. In trains and buses, reserved seats for people with disabilities should be strictly followed. Often, others sit there and no one stops them. 4. Staff should be trained to guide and assist PwDs respectfully without making them feel uncomfortable. Hope these points help in building a more inclusive and friendly transport system. Thanks again.
