Notwithstanding the current challenges, Indian steel industry has significant potential for growth The per capita steel consumption in India at 61 kg is much lower than the global average of 208 kg or that of other major steel producing countries. The planned investment in infrastructure sector, expansion of railways network, development of domestic shipbuilding industry, opening up of defence sector for private participation, anticipated growth in automobile and capital goods industry and the construction in urban & rural areas and the continued investment in Roads and Highways are expected to create significant domestic demand for steel. With GDP growth of 7.5% per annum till 2030-31, crude steel demand in the country is expected to increase to 120-125 MT by 2019-20, 155-165 MT by 2023-24, and 235-275 MT by 2030-31, requiring a significant increase in capacity and production of steel within the country.

Some of the measures identified by Ministry of Steel to boost Steel demand in near future are:

1) Rural sector:
The low per capita steel consumption in the rural sector of about 12 kg provides substantial scope for growth specifically under: Housing under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna, Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojna etc. can be brought to steel based platform
Rural housing targets to achieve 1 crore dwelling units in next 3 years and usage of steel based structures will provide huge impetus to the demand of Steel`
2) Urban sector:
Commercial and residential buildings and flyovers could be targeted.
“Housing for All” Mission by 2022 can directly contribute to pre-fab and precast mass affordable housing, which in turn will lead to higher consumption of steel.
Bridges, pavements and crash barriers used in Roads & Highways can be upgraded to steel bridges, steel reinforced pavements and steel crash barriers respectively.
3) Road, Highways & Bridges:
There are over 1 lakh bridges in the country and “conditions survey” is being conducted by Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) for rehabilitation/ reconstruction of 1500 road bridges. Further, 208 “Road over bridges” (ROBs) are identified for re-construction within the next 2 years by the Public Works Departments. Steel intensive bridges can be used in place of conventional RCC bridges, wherever possible because of cost advantage, quicker installation and longer life span.

4) Railways:
Usage of steel in railways is mainly limited to laying of railway tracks, rolling stocks, wagons and coaches. However, there is considerable scope of increasing steel usage in making railway station, foot over bridges, rail coaches, construction of steel based railway colony buildings especially in seismic prone areas, construction of dedicated freight corridors & superfast rail corridors and construction of more steel bridges for saving time & CAPEX.
Railways are shifting from overhead electrical setups to underground systems. The existing overhead poles & other fittings may be given to interested players in the steel sector for conversion to underground conduit pipes. Efforts will be made with Ministry of Railways to increase the usage of steel in Railways.

5) Defense, shipbuilding and other manufacturing sectors:
The “Make in India” initiative is expected to witness significant investment, which will stimulate steel demand. However, such benefit can only be passed on to the domestic steel producers if it is made mandatory for government funded/PPP projects in these sectors to source a part of their steel requirement from domestic producers.
Ministry of Steel is taking up with Ministry of Urban Development, Ministry of Rural Development and Ministry of Road Transport & Highways and other Ministries concerned and also with the State Governments to increase steel usage in rural and urban sector, especially in construction and infrastructure development.

All stakeholders concerned are therefore requested to submit their comments/ suggestions on MyGov by 30.11.2016.

Increase value addition to Steel. Special steel. The Indian market will consume and reach a higher average - of more than 61kg per capita steel consumption. In the meanwhile, if capacities can be built to cater to markets outside ( already available) then it will push up steel production.Every steel producer in the country should perhaps work on the export market of special steel at the same time keeping the their supply to the local market a priority!

steel bodied vehicle which are old or accident vehicle in custody of police or RTO lying on the road. This must be collected and melted for reuse. This will not only clear space but also help in swatch bharath mission as well as we get tons of steel for use in system.

Steel consumption is supported by growth in construction, automobile & engineering industries.

Construction industry growth can be augmented by infra projects & housing projects

Housing projects growth would be in support to PM's announcement to provide home to all by 2022.

let's support this by incentivising housing construction by allocation of steel to economy housing projects at subsidised rates.

This would be boon to housing & steel industry both

Steel has countless applications in everyday life BUT it comes from those resources which are exhaustible like coal which is sure to run out in next 50 yrs.In order to make a sustained manufacturing sector,we must look for alternatives for steel in shipbuilding, defense, manufacture and the rest. Also to stay a superpower in future beyond 2050,we must also set up a planning commission for planning in such a way that development extends more than 30-40 yrs swiftly like Sweden has already done.

Production of steel requires coal, iron ore, limestone & manganese. In order to increase the production,we must increase production along with its rate, transport & availability of each mentioned material.Additionally we can also use new steel plants all over the country along with new plants for each of the raw materials mentioned above to increase the net production i.e. increasing raw material production and availability along with new plants will yield increasing steel production.

I personally don't feel comparing countries on the basis of per capita consumption and such as each country has various sets of situations. So comparing China and India is like comparing India(2016)&India(1976).You probably got what I mean to say. That however doesnt means we are not to develop. We shall develop as per our choice in the way we want to achieve a global level. So to get disheartened by seeing the size of Indian and Chinese production and consumption of Steel is not good as per me.

China Exported 1599 MMT of steel in 2015 & India exported 89.58 MMT. 17 time less.
India minimum Cost of producing steel is 28 rs on average where as china somehow manage to dump the steel in India at the Price 24 Rs in India, with all excise duties.
Cost of production can be decreased when all steel manufacturing industries will use waste heat recovery system to enhance their production efficiency, Coal additives which reduces coal consumption around 10-15%, LED lights to reduce consumption

India produces generic steel focused for civil construction. promote more steel which has industrial application like tooling and aerospace industry. All such steel are imported.
Steel industry should price based on cost + Margin, rather than current practice of International price + $ value + import cost model.
Steel cartels need to be broken to increase demand

Traditionally houses are built with bricks and concrete which is a costlier way to build structures.

Structural engineers need to be brought together to give standard home and shed designs with ready to download drawings. This creates jobs and opportunities.

People need to be educated that steel structure too is long with standing like Qutb iron pole or Eiffel tower.

Kab tak hum government par hi depend honge ki Road banao, bridge banao steel ki demand badegi. Sorry kisiko dukh pahunchna mera irada nahi hain, magar socho agar garib se amir, bacche se buddhe steel use kar sakte hain to kya hoga.
