This award will help solve the problem in a defined time frame and develop an affordable product/solution which is of global excellence. The envisioned areas for the Challenge draw upon the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as Good Health and Sanitation. The indicative areas for suggesting themes for BIRAC Innovation Challenge Award are:

Health: Foster healthy lives and promote well-being of society through development of products especially in medical technology (Devices and diagnostics) which can alleviate healthcare challenges in India. Indications are: reduce maternal and neonatal mortality, end the epidemics of communicable diseases.

1. How do we bring down the cost and prevalence of medical diagnostics at scale, so 80% of Indians are able to have an annual health assessment in 5 years? Is it possible to turn diagnostics into a commodity for key diseases, and de-link the regulations binding diagnostics with treatment?
2. What technologies and incentives will bring habit changes in open defecation to monitor and reduce its incidence? There maybe business opportunities in getting data on gastro-intestinal conditions at scale.

As per a report published by Central Bureau for Health Intelligence (CBHI) in 2015, we have only 7 doctors per 1000 citizens. It get event more thin in the rural areas. With the advancement in computing technologies and use of deep learning (Artificial intelligence) for detecting diseases and assisting doctors world wide, India should focus on use of these technologies to endogenously develop the solutions as per our needs. We should promote collaboration between Biotech and IT/Software tech.

Sickle cell disease is reported since 1952 in India but villagewise data and community wise data is hardly avaiable in details including projects from NRHM. This is one such data, which will guide similar projects on SCD and related hemolytic anemia at village level.
Since SC, ST and OBC population is suffering with this genetic disorder, its a high priority area. In village based anemia assessment project permanent village health centers should be established with life long activity.

Specifically in child and maternal health, some of the good area can be reaching every village with basic health monitoring equipment. My area of research is hematology and field level monitoring of pregnant women is not 100% covered in all the villages. I propose few projects in this directions. Other supportive programs can be making it operational at every village level. Another area which is very much related to this is abortions and childhood mortality mortality related to viral etiology.
