India has been making steady progress in the field of sports, but it has potential to do much more. If right steps are taken towards development of sports culture, integration of sports and education, early spotting of talent, strong support to sportspersons through top-class coaching, competition exposures, sports science and sports medicine support, etc., India can emerge as a sports super power.

Views are invited on what specific steps need to be taken.

Problem with a career in sports is that those who don't reach top levels don't get any income. Sometimes even top sports persons end up selling vegetables for income. Good jobs must be created for them like coaching the next generation.

China’s essential aim was to win glory for the nation through sport. To achieve this goal, the Chinese established centralized elite sports system. There were government run sports training centres at all levels – national, provincial, city and county sports schools. Children as young as 4 years were identified and put into these training centres. With all expenses borne by the State, the children were made to train out of their skins so that one day they may excel at the international level

1. Identify sports and disciplines to be targeted for Olympic medals. 2. Sports federations should be run by ex sports persons of that concerned field. 3. Most importantly start LEAGUES for the sports that are part of Olympics. It will attract corporate funding of sports, improve the quality of players produced, and will also attract viewers and youngsters to Olympic sports.

Sport sector must be developed in the country. Coaches and players retired from field must cultivate the budding players with the help of govt. Sports must be developed as bright career for children. It must be free from politics. An honest and fair work can accelerate this sector. Retired players must be given preference by the govt. to appoint them as games teacher in schools and sports authority.

The boards of various sports must be freed from the chairman or presidents who doesn't bother with the game and fair play but have the dirty intentions and are using the sport for their own benefits. The politicians who are not players must be terminated from their posts and their should be a qualification for the post to be a player related to the game.
