Contd answer to: Should all universities have essential language departments with focus on dying or extinct languages? These Centres should critically engage with existing framework of analysis and methodological pluralities focusing on the overlapping hierarchies of language, caste, class, gender and region. Such a focus will bring out the oft-neglected discursive spheres of language inequalities of various kinds such as the inter-dialogicalaspects of language and education, language and print

Should all universities have essential language departments with focus on dying or extinct languages? These centres should be multidisciplinary centres, involving linguists, social scientists, geographers, and not merely language departments. The objective of their work must be not only the documentation and description of the linguistic, anthropological and socio-political facts of endangered/minority Indian languages but also the interface between language and power.

contd. answer to How can cultural integration take place through language? Rather, in an multilingual country like India, educational policy must create the conditions for the historically disadvantaged languages to elaborate their domains of use, as well as conditions in which diverse cultural and social experiences are able to talk to each other.

How can cultural integration take place through language? Cultural integration cannot take place through enforced assimilation to a single language, but rather in first respecting the diversity of languages (and cultures) in India and encouraging communication within them. The mere reproduction of the existing inequalities of opportunity and access by designating a few languages as the repository and vehicle of ‘Indianness’ is an educational policy doomed to failure.
