Khadi is not merely a piece of cloth. It is a philosophy. A way of life. A symbol of empowerment, self-dependence, pride of history, Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of the relevance of roots.

As Hon’ble PM Narendra Modi on his radio program “Mann ki Baat” on 3rd October, 2014 said that “we must promote the use of Khadi and we should buy at least one Khadi article. If you buy Khadi, you light the lamp of prosperity in the house of the poor”.This appealled to an increase in Khadi sales by 125% at the various outlets in India. This reflects a latent demand for Khadi, which needs to tapped which in turn will create rural employment. Potential consumers of Khadi could be schools, hospitals, Railways, PSUs, Army, Para-military forces, Fashion houses etc.

USP of the Khadi product is its eco-friendly, almost carbon neutral nature, which leaves near zero water footprints. It is socio-economically sustainable textile product. It’s an all-weather and allergy free fabric. Hence, Khadi use is a step towards ‘Zero Effect’ and ‘Zero Poverty’ India.

Currently, people employed in Khadi sector are earning Rs.1200 to Rs.1800 per month. MGIRI Wardha has developed a Solar Charkha which can increase the earnings to four times the existing one, cutting the drudgery along.Taking the initiative forward, MoMSME is going to start a pilot project in the KHANWA village, Nawada district of Bihar, where 100 Solar Charkhas would be distributed to the rural women for spinning of yarn. Under buyback arrangement with ‘Gram Nirmaan Mandal, Khadi Sansthan, GAYA, these yarns would be weaved into Khadi products. This scheme islikely to provide Rs.5000 to 8000 per month to the women artisans. This model of wage earnings to the rural women has to be scaled up so as to achieve the visionary goal of providing job opportunities to crores of rural women in coming years.

This, in turn is expected to lay a platform for another visionary goal of increasing the market share of Khadi in the textile sector from present 0.4% to 5% in next Five years in first phase.

In pursuance of the above twin visionary goals, you are requested to give your valuable inputs on

1. How to enhance the production and sale of Khadi?
2. How to create a niche for Khadi products particularly among youths and about 2.5 crore NRIs living abroad?
3. How to foster awareness about Khadi products?

The last date for submission of your comments is 31st March, 2015.

Some years back, leading fashion designer and Padmashri awardee Wendell Rodricks had taken initiative to promote the Goan traditional saree, 'Kunbi' and had achieved quite some success too (read- http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/life-style/fashion/designers/Wendell-Rodricks-is-taking-tradition-globally/articleshow/9859585.cms).
It is recommendrd that fashion designers like him can be roped in to make Khadi an internationally appealing brand.

How to create a niche for Khadi products particularly among youths and about 2.5 crore NRIs living abroad?
As regards NRIs, Khadi should be promoted during Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas celebrations. Our embassies should also work in this regard. Leading fashion designers should be roped in and a special Khadi brand should be launched in as soon as possible.

How to create a niche for Khadi products particularly among youths and about 2.5 crore NRIs living abroad?
Making a brand "Khadi India" and selling it through leading textile-chains will help. Trendy clothes in Khadi should be mad available. Young MPs and youth icons should promote Khadi through mass-media. School bags of Khadi should be provided at subsidised rates. Khadi should be made a symbol of India's national identity. Khadi exhibition and sale should be organised in colleges etc.

It is also recommended that to increase sale of Khadi, the price of Khadi products should be further decreased to make it economically feasible to the poorest of the poor. Govt guest houses and hotels should use Khadi linen. Our embassies should also use Khadi. At Indian High Commissions and Embassies, Khadi sale counters should be set up. Khadi malls should be set up to attract customers. Khadi should form costume of Air India- our national carrier. Khadi should also be sold at Duty Free Shops

I propose the following steps to enhance production and sale of Khadi:
It is necessary to engage Self Help groups in increasing the production. Small scale and cottage industries of Khadi should be promoted. A brand for "Khadi India" could be created, to make Khadi a commerical success. Govt employees' uniforms could be made of Khadi. Khadi bags, purses etc. should be promoted. At airports and major railway stations, Khadi haats be established. Khadi clothes be gifted to visiting foreign guests

At present the boards are a parking place for retired/defeated/sick politicians who are unable to contribute for Khadi development.
While the workers will be able to produce quality goods, marketing is beyond their reach and Govt support is necessary.Depts of Union Govt and State Govt may also supply khadi uniforms to their eligible employees.
A group of committed officers be entrusted with the task of promotion with close monitoring by equally committed ministers if scheme has to succeed.

me and my team has worked to take out Khadi, out of old Gandhian phylosofy of Swawlamban. For me it is just Eco friendly fabric, with maximum labour genaration by Handspun and Handwoven operations.
New processes has tried out on fabric to make it suitable for 21st century, under new Brand Image. For example punch line is THREAD OF INDIA.With best Government suport, there is a possibility to tie knought between rural india with rest os the world.Sp.scheme for corporates is needed in first phase

Khadi has an impression of highly crude stuff and is a symbol of Indian poverty and Netas. It also carries a image that it can be used for only nehru jackets, kurtas or shirt of white color. Thus no sale it is not associated with modern India. If we allow khadi to mix with other fabrics and potray it as exclusive & comfortable plus can be converted into any other form and is colorful. It will sell. that is going to help rural india.
