Khadi is not merely a piece of cloth. It is a philosophy. A way of life. A symbol of empowerment, self-dependence, pride of history, Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of the relevance of roots.

As Hon’ble PM Narendra Modi on his radio program “Mann ki Baat” on 3rd October, 2014 said that “we must promote the use of Khadi and we should buy at least one Khadi article. If you buy Khadi, you light the lamp of prosperity in the house of the poor”.This appealled to an increase in Khadi sales by 125% at the various outlets in India. This reflects a latent demand for Khadi, which needs to tapped which in turn will create rural employment. Potential consumers of Khadi could be schools, hospitals, Railways, PSUs, Army, Para-military forces, Fashion houses etc.

USP of the Khadi product is its eco-friendly, almost carbon neutral nature, which leaves near zero water footprints. It is socio-economically sustainable textile product. It’s an all-weather and allergy free fabric. Hence, Khadi use is a step towards ‘Zero Effect’ and ‘Zero Poverty’ India.

Currently, people employed in Khadi sector are earning Rs.1200 to Rs.1800 per month. MGIRI Wardha has developed a Solar Charkha which can increase the earnings to four times the existing one, cutting the drudgery along.Taking the initiative forward, MoMSME is going to start a pilot project in the KHANWA village, Nawada district of Bihar, where 100 Solar Charkhas would be distributed to the rural women for spinning of yarn. Under buyback arrangement with ‘Gram Nirmaan Mandal, Khadi Sansthan, GAYA, these yarns would be weaved into Khadi products. This scheme islikely to provide Rs.5000 to 8000 per month to the women artisans. This model of wage earnings to the rural women has to be scaled up so as to achieve the visionary goal of providing job opportunities to crores of rural women in coming years.

This, in turn is expected to lay a platform for another visionary goal of increasing the market share of Khadi in the textile sector from present 0.4% to 5% in next Five years in first phase.

In pursuance of the above twin visionary goals, you are requested to give your valuable inputs on

1. How to enhance the production and sale of Khadi?
2. How to create a niche for Khadi products particularly among youths and about 2.5 crore NRIs living abroad?
3. How to foster awareness about Khadi products?

The last date for submission of your comments is 31st March, 2015.

with the awareness that is being spread through the various campaigns of the government regarding Khadi, no doubt that the material has been brought back to limelight.now this should be sustained forever and efforts should be thrown regarding the commercialization of the Khadi products. Views must be welcomed and exchanged from the ace fashion, interior designers so as to optimally utilize the indigenous fabric in various forms of amenities making Khadi a patriotic as well as a style statement.

Women by birth care for life, be them their own children or plants. Let this instinct be harnessed for engaging them in teaching them how to raise indigenously grown seedlings. Their care for life would surely turn barren lands into lively, green patch with clean air and prosperous economy. Their involvement in greening India would vitalise soil, water and air purification naturally.

This will set an example for Make in India... buy things Made out of India...a good message will go across people of India & abroad. From April on-wards holidays start for schools/colleges. There would be lot of shopping during this period. Khadi Gramudyog should come out of 50% discounts as summer sale. This will clear all the old stocks and increase revenue to the govt and better job opportunity for rural people

As you mentioned in Maan Ki Baat that people should buy at-least a basic handkerchief from Khadi. As you have lakhs of follower like Rajanikanth or Bachchans..request if you could spare few minutes of your time to visit Khadi Shop which is in CP (DELHI) and buy something and also some items from Bata Shop & as you like to wear watches a watch from Titan shop on a Saturday afternoon to avoid traffic problems. U can see huge no. of people follow U on this regard this will increase khadi sales.

The govt promote khadi parks in all the states and encourage young entrepreneur to set up production units by providing easyloans , easy sourcing of machineries and free training facilities and providing markets by directing big retail houses to source from these manufacturing units to enjoy some tax deductions.

In my opinion, all major textile corporates in India like Madura garments, Indus League, Aravind Mills etc have to out source a part of their production to Khadi and sell the products through their showroom. The aim is to promote the khadi products and give employment, not promoting the brand. So the corporates can sell these products with what ever name they want.

I recently visted Khadi gram udyog in Fort, Mumbai. It had a lot of nice shirts, ties etc. However there was no customer. And there is a shop near to it fabindia, which was full with customers even though it was more expensive. The difference was the brand and service. I would recommend gov about it.
