Innovative ideas on circular economy in E-waste

Today, electronic waste poses a significant challenge for society. With the introduction of innovative features and up-gradation, people are changing their devices by discarding the old ones, thereby contributing to the generation of electronic waste significantly.

Replacing the linear systems with circular in electrical and electronic equipment intends to maximize value at each life-cycle stage by reusing, repairing, recovering remanufacturing, regenerating products and material.

Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) observes Swachhata Pakhwada 2022 from 1st February 2022 to 15th February 2022 promoting ‘E-waste se Raksha- Swachhata hi Suraksha’. Citizens are invited to share their innovative ideas on how circular economy practices can help in sustainable and efficient E-waste Management.

The best entries from the citizens will be identified by the Ministry and will be featured on the MyGov page.

The last date to receive suggestions is 15th February 2022.

Electrical e waste should be recycled because a loat of waste is occurring in this country at many places. Plastic e waste can easily recycled by cretin one most thing such as bricks can easily prepare through plastic e waste

Transform Consumption Modes to Increase Market Demand for Circular Products and Services : The industry will only scale-up the design and development of products integrating circular principles when there is clear demand from both individual consumers and large-scale buyers.

Incentivize and Support Product Design for Circularity : About 80% of the total environmental impact of a product is determined in the design phase. Providing incentives and technical support to designing electronics for longevity (making them durable, easy-to-upgrade, or easy-to-repair), recyclability (easy-to-disassemble, with safe inputs), and with recycled content is key to achieving a circular economy.

Designing electrical products and their components for longevity, and changing consumer behavior to make them stay in use for longer, helps to reduce demand for new products. This cuts down resource use and other destructive environmental and social impacts from production and waste.

A circular economy is vital if we are to transform the electronics industry’s effects on human health, the environment, and biodiversity. It will allow us to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, save precious resources, and protect workers and communities from health hazards associated with waste. The industry urgently needs to become more sustainable and resilient.

Electronic waste also represents the fastest-growing waste stream in the world, with products often thrown away prematurely and less than 20% collected and recycled. Raw materials valued at approximately $57 billion are lost in e-waste globally—mainly iron, copper, and gold—and lack of proper collection and recycling leads to pollution and health hazards.

How to generate awareness about circular economy in general public? When any new rule is notified, normally government issues an advertisement in newspapers. This goes unnoticed. There is no public discussion on TV channels and Electronic Media as they are mostly busy with political debates and some other controversial issues. What is the role of media? Are they not supposed to generate public interest in matters related to public welfare? While driving, I listen big FM 92.7. They do talk about matter of public interests such as cleanliness, environment etc. Recently they talked about e-waste also. More such discussions are required in public spaces to generate widespread awareness about handling of all types domestic wastes. Circular economy is not about only e-Waste, circular economy will help in reducing plastic and metallic wastes also.

Electronic waste is a very big challenge for our country.it should solve it quickly. 1 Recycle of electronic product is very important to manage e waste. 2 Green technology help us to reduce electronic waste . 3 Multiple use of one product help us to control over e waste. 4 A tax has been imposed over electronic goods for collect money for disposal. 5 Quality of electronic product should be strong and long use.

Implementation of vehicle scrappage policy is going to generate huge E-waste, metal waste & other waste. Plant setup will have dismantling unit, segregation of rubber tyres, plastic, foam, fabric, glass, batteries, oily waste, E-waste, metallic waste. Reusable products will go to second hand market and the remaining scrap will be sent for recycling. Small steel plants will buy shredded metal scrap whereas major steel plants will buy compressed metal sculls. This plant will need at least 2 sq km and above area of land. For any factory setup It is suggested to government to provide the land on annual lease agreement. In the same plant other domestic /industrial E-waste also can be disposed(process is same). Oily waste can be refined and used and if it is oil soaked cotton rags can be disposed through incinerators. Rubber tires can be shredded, after segregating the steel and fabric rubber granules can be recycled. Plastic & glass can be recycled.

One of the goals of the circular economy is to have a positive effect on the planet’s ecosystems and to fight the excessive exploitation of natural resources. The circular economy has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the use of raw materials, optimize agricultural productivity and decrease the negative externalities brought by the linear model. When it comes to reducing greenhouse gases, a circular economy can be helpful: Because it uses renewable energy that in the long run is less polluting than fossil fuels. Thanks to reusing and dematerializing, fewer materials and production processes are needed to provide good and functional products. Because residues are seen as valuable and they are absorbed as much as possible in order to be reused in the process. Since the preferred choices will be energy-efficient and non-toxic materials and manufacturing and recycling processes will be selected. As a matter of fact, an Ellen MacArthur Foundation study found.
