The population of Chandigarh Urban Complex (CUC) comprising Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula has been growing fast at a rate of over 5% per year in the last decade. There has been a phenomenal growth in the population of vehicles as well especially the two and four wheelers in this period and their rising use due to rising household incomes. Chandigarh has the highest per capita income in the country. Besides nearby towns are also growing fast and have large traffic interaction with the Chandigarh. In the absence of adequate and quality mass transport system, people are using the personalized modes which is not only leading to congestion on road network but also increasing environmental pollution.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed among the Governments of Haryana and Punjab, and Chandigarh Administration for the formation of Greater Chandigarh Transport Corporation (GCTC) on Thursday for developing a comprehensive integrated multi-modal urban and suburban commuting system for the Union Territory and surrounding areas in the states of Haryana and Punjab. Also the administration has been working to develop cycling tracks all over the city.

However the citizen participation is very much required to frame a integrated and detailed urban mobility plan for “City Beautiful”. So, the Chandigarh Administration hereby invites ideas, views, opinion and suggestions from the residents so that the objective of “Smart Urban Solutions” could be achieved.

Here's what I have to add. Those rickshaw pullers need not to pull those rickshaws anymore. With the population of Chandigarh not exploding like Delhi or Mumbai, I think the government can initiate replacing these old, rickety rickshaws with something efficient and modern. People bargaining for 10,5, 15 rupees and then disrespecting those poor fellows, is certainly a dreadful sight. I think like many other aspects, Chandigarh can be another model city for other Indian cities to follow.

set up Peace Villages. What are Peace Villages? These are complexes setup outside different cities for creating spaces for community living based on generosity and openness. They will be places where there will be plenty of work for hundreds of people to do Organic Agriculture, run Educational Institutions with accent on joyful education for children. The school will also act as production centers for many artistic and high technology products.

Transportation not only in Chandigarh but in all cities should be planned: 1. Introducing metros or electric trains from now. Railways must be revolutionized. 2. Local auto and rickshaws must be given proper policy of fare structure which will reduce cheating with customers. 3. Govt. busses should be changed with new advanced busses. Fare can be compensated by taking advertisements on the busses every month.

The road network was made using the 7V rule which later got converted to 8V rule. This strategy is very unique in india. A similar strategy has to be drawn up for railway/metro network (preferably underground? which will interconnect the city better and faster and at the same time will be cleaner.

1.The city has got only three commonly used exits. The most traffic is on the road going out to Chandigarh-Delhi expressway. At airport chowk there is no roundabout for smooth traffic flow because of which everyday there is traffic jam. A roundabout or Flyover at this crucial junction is must. 2.Because the people can afford private transport very comfortably, an increase in city bus transport will only be fruitful if A/C buses are increased. 3.City needs its metro ASAP to handle its traffic.

While there are options like metro and monorail, no form of transport has as much utlity as a suburban railway network. Chandigarh should get local trains that connect it to the nearby suburbs. As the city grows, they can have a metro to complement and interlink the railway network.
