Department of Biotechnology
Department of Biotechnology (DBT) under the Ministry of Science and Technology, over the past 30 years has given a new impetus to developments in modern biology and biotechnology. The department has provided continuous support to facilitate the journey from nascent sector to a sunrise industry. There have been significant achievements in the growth and application of biotechnology in the areas of agriculture, healthcare, animal sciences, environment and industry. Today India is among the top 12 biotech destinations in the world and ranks third in the Asia Pacific region. India has the second- highest number of US Food and drug administration (USFDA) approved plants, after the USA and is largest producer of recombinant Hepatitis B vaccine.
DBT's vision & strategy is "Attaining new heights in biotechnology research, shaping biotechnology into a premier precision tool of the future for creation of wealth and ensuring social justice specially for the welfare of the poor”.
