Free LPG to 5 crore rural families @ 8 LPG cylinders/ year @ Rs 600/ cyl for 5 years will cost Rs 120,000 cr. But if they are given free readymade biogas systems instead (@ Rs 8,000 per system), it will cost only Rs 40,000 cr, giving 12 cyl equi/ year (50% more gas). Biogas is safer than LPG, will save foreign exchange and offer a Global-Warming Mitigation Potential (GMP) of 200 Mt of CO(2) equiv. p.a, about US $ 2 Billion carbon credit & generate more rural jobs.
