Both solid waste management and waste water treatment have the potential to make our cities much cleaner. This task calls for ideas and innovative approaches to make the same happen.
Plastic is a real waste in this country. Better if govt. finds a permanent solution like making mandatory, use of eco friendly bags or others which are env. friendly. Recently IIP, Dehradun has found out a technology to convert Plastic waste into fuel which is a great part time soln. Plastic should b collectd nd converted.
Whether it be a Metro or a small town or a village, we have to educate the masses about the nature of waste generated at our homes. It is to be started from the home itself, by separating the bio-degradable waste and non-biodegradable waste, so as to enable the Local Civic Authorities to dispose the same accordingly. Similarly, till the time any city or village develops a proper drainage system, we have to promote the use if Septic Tanks and also Bio-Gas.
i have been observing from 3 to 4 days that people put garbage on road any where while garbage dustin should be their in every 80 to 100 meters
first and foremost thing would be to have separate garbage collector at different colonies for different trash items like bio-degradable and non biodegradable items. And having logos or print of items on the trash box will help the user to understand the trash type easily.
3R........REUSE,REDUCE,RECYCLE
Attached are ideas, most of which can be implemented right away.
Solid Waste & Waste Water must be taken care in a decentralized manner with zero discharge technologies &, it becomes boon when this can be done to generate net revenue. Ultra High Temperature Gasification Technology for solid waste management & Soil Biotechnology for waste water treatment are such technologies. These are proven recent innovations which await wide spread commercialization. Any big investor - private or government is most welcome for it to me...........
SWM is already in practice in some cities in India, i want to higlight some challenges which i faced regarding my SWM project at city level:
1) Public awareness (to launch awareness programmes at public places)
2) Controversies b/w company and govt agencies
3) Strict Laws for solid disposal ( fine/imprisonment)
4) Availability of dustbins (to mandate all shops and street vendors to use dustbins)
5) Fast functioning of segregation of waste to ultimate disposal.
6) Waste to Energy Conversion
Segregation of waste is extremely important. Each and every constituent of waste has market value (selling value) and/or also well proven scavenging out procedure... but when garbage gets mixed.. then only it becomes "waste".. Planning commission's report on urban solid waste management explains excellently in this regard. Pune has successfully implemented "Zero Garbage wards" in few of its ward... in this there is almost 100% door to door collection of segregated waste and it gets treated
