Concept

Mother's Day is a celebration honouring the mother of the family, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. This day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May every year and is an occasion to show your affection, respect and care towards your mother.

In the spirit of celebrating Mother’s day, Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India is organizing a Contest inviting stories about mothers. The Contest shall commence from 8th May, 2016 for a month long duration, ending on 6th June, 2016.

The concept of this campaign is to promote the idea of children sharing anecdotes/ stories about their mother who has defied gender stereotypes, raised her voice against gender discrimination and championed the cause of gender equality and empowerment. This story should have left a long lasting impact and consequently led to a change in the mindset of her family and/or the community at large. The premise is based on the fact that relationship with mother is one of the closest and may be a strong influencer in shaping behaviours and attitudes of her children. A mother is also a source of inspiration and a role model for her children. When an anecdote/story is narrated about a mother, it can be used as a catalyst to bring about a positive change in societal mindset. This may further lead to a more gender sensitive society which recognizes the contributions of a mother, in particular and women, in general.

The objective of the contest is to engage with larger audience through sharing of stories about mothers, thereby encouraging inter-generational dialogue, sensitizing men and boys, being a role model for an empowered daughter. This also creates an opportunity for open conversations against gender discrimination, inequality and dis-empowerment, which in turn leads to a positive mindset change in the society.

Some of the suggested themes are gender equality and empowerment, gender discrimination, sexual harassment, domestic violence, social evils like dowry and early marriage and so on.

Most of the elderly people are been left by their children
Unaware of their own fate which is now hidden
Shame on that society, which shun its old folk
Teach your children to take care of them round the clock
Or else remember this can happen to you since life is no different
Life rotates in a circle and who knows the fate
Thus, imbibe in them the fact before it’s too late
If it can happen to their parents, it can happen to them
It is the same destiny, same rule and the same game

MOTHER ..These words might be words for most but meant a lot to me.Once we were taught “Life originates from life”..a beautiful never ending story about “SHE”.She stood like a rock.Time passes by and in scorching sun her shadow sheltered us ,we grown up and her little buds became flower now. We proudly said we are roses of the plant which groomed us in storms , an ocean of immense patience and care ,expects nothing from us and we want everything from her .She is no other...YES SHE IS OUR MOTHER

M" is for the million things she gave me,
"O" means only that she's growing old,
"T" is for the tears she shed to save me,
"H" is for her heart of purest gold;
"E" is for her eyes, with love-light shining,
"R" means right, and right she'll always be,
Put them all together, they spell "MOTHER," A word that means the world to me

The story is about a woman who had been married away by her parents forcefully with a much older aged man. She was only 11 years then... Please open the file to read the full story.

(It's a true story based on child marriage, gender inequality, girls education and suffering of a mother. It was really difficult to keep the story under 200 words because the pains and sufferings of a mother/woman goes through cannot be described in merely few sentences. They are the living goddess on earth.)
