India is among 51 countries to sign the “Rome Declaration” on “Achieving Self-sufficiency in Safe Blood and blood products based voluntary non-remunerated donation”. Blood is an intrinsic requirement for health care and proper functioning of the health system. National AIDS Control Organization under Department of Health and Family Welfare has been primarily responsible for ensuring provision of safe blood for the country since 1992. National Blood Policy 2003 reiterates firmly the government’s commitment to provide safe and adequate quantity of blood, blood components and blood products.

However, in India, a needy patient or his relatives have to run from pillar to post in search of blood and the onus of procurement of blood still lies with the patient and not with the service provider.

Suggestions are invited on how to develop a nationally coordinated and well networked blood transfusion service in the country and reach 100% voluntary blood donation to enable us to meet the global goal of self sufficiency in blood and blood products.

System with online interface need to be created for Blood donations.People donating blood to be given credits which they can use for themselves or for others.Request for blood by people with credits will necessary need to be met.Credits of each person should be maintained in system & debited based on them redeeming.Volunteer contact & blood group data with date of last donation needs to be in the system so that SMS for urgent needs can be sent only to eligible people based on geo tagging.

This is bit associated with the health of the girls and women. In the blood donation camps organized at college level we could see that most of the girls can't donate blood as they are not above the required weight. So increasing the health awareness among the college girls would help a lot I think.

we can have mobile banks/collection centers which can be deployed in every locality of city on weekends/holidays. This may attract/motivate people who want to donate blood but don't find enough time to go to hospitals. Also, use of papers to fill forms/applications should be avoided and a person should be issued a smart card(just like rotary blood banks) which contains his former records and basic blood reports. This will ensure less time in formalities and digital centralization of information.
