Employability of our students is a matter of concern. At the other end of the spectrum is need for greater investment in research. Industry academia linkages are essential to meet both these ends. While we have various efforts in this direction, these have not fructified as expected. We need to find out how and what is needed for a more fruitful partnering.

Finally, about the soft skills. As team working, proper communication skills and respecting others’ feelings are also important for anybody’s success, training on acquiring these skills can also be offered on the campus. Creating awareness about professional ethics and social responsibilities can also be added here.

What is also important is, the attitude of the student. Some industries are of opinion that offering internships is a burden to them, as some interns always expect from them some kind of teaching, and not trying to understand the things on their own. This is where the students need to be offered some training on how to carry out the internship works, with just guidance only from industry-supervisor. Then we can expect more number of industries coming forward to accept them as interns. (..cont)

But these are the skills the industry wants. So, project works need to be strengthened. Sometimes, good project knowledge alone can help to get employment without internships and other such things. Software and hardware skills mastered while doing the project can help them in a big way. So project works need to be carried out properly. Faculty members also can hone their skills by guiding the project works, that helps them indirectly to improve their teaching capability in that domain.(..cont)

Project work is the opportunity to the student to develop and exhibit his problem solving skills by applying the knowledge he has acquired through all those courses he has undergone. It also demands the collection and study of additional literature, problem formulation, trying out possible solutions, learning some new Hardware and software tools and then finally developing a system that does the job. But unfortunately, project works are not being done this way in some institutions. (..cont)

Normally, an industry looks for a future employee in the intern. But when it fails to see that in the recruited intern, then the industry may gradually turn away from that practice. So, the institutions should see that some project works are offered to the students on the campus and that project experience should pave way for the future internships in the industry. It is important here to highlight that these project works should be conducted properly. (..cont)

Student internships are another means by which employment opportunities are explored by working as intern and then getting absorbed. But these opportunities are available in few numbers only. There are some internships offered by some industries where the student pays for that. Though this is not the type what is required exactly, still students are opting for them with a hope that they acquaint themselves with the industrial working environment with which their employment scope broadens.(.cont)

It is also possible for some autonomous institutions to tie-up with some industries to offer a few courses suggested by those industries to its students, and work out employment options for them in those industries. As the industries are trying to reduce the training needs of their new recruits, this kind of approach can be worked out. But care should be taken that these courses should not be too narrow and students’ employability with other industries is not compromised with this. (..cont)

It is also a good idea to invite industry experts to deliver guest lectures or to work as adjunct faculty to teach some of these courses. This can bring the knowledge of the industry to institution. It can also help the industries to address the blame that they are not doing their part to develop their future manpower. Recent initiatives of Govt of India suggesting its scientists and other professionals to deliver guest lectures in institutions is also a welcome move in this direction. (..cont)

If it becomes successful, it may lead to consultancy activities of the institution also. But, in the initial stages, industries may not be willing to discuss much about their challenges, as they lack confidence on the institutions. Faculty members need not get discouraged on that. They can try to understand how the things are happening there in the industry, and search the Internet and other technical literature to know more about the challenges of the industry. (..cont)

Opportunities should be given to faculty members to elevate themselves to that level. Visiting the industries of his domain knowledge, taking his students to those industries for field trips, discussing with the industry experts about the latest technologies and as well as challenges in that industry, collecting literature and conducting research studies that address these challenges can make the faculty member to reach that level.
