Although Indian Railways enjoy the highest captive eyeballs in a railway system internationally, it earns less than 5% of its revenues through non-tariff sources. Many of the world railway systems generate 10% to 20% of their revenues from non-tariff sources.

IR typically has focused on increasing revenues through tariff hikes. It wants to change this and challenge the conventional thinking by exploiting new sources of revenue so that every asset, tangible or non-tangible, gets optimally monetized

We invite ideas from citizens on increasing non fare revenue for Indian Railways.

Although my focus is on fare but the revenue can be generate without disturb fare:

It is fair practice of Indian railway to check tickets by T.C.s manually if we make it with the help of mobile device by embedding QR/BAR code on the tickets it will help railway to check real-time status of passengers on train also the railway can allocate the tickets of absent passengers to people who is having ticket in waiting or to upgrade the on board passengers although on board bribe can be minimum.

Railways can lease two pantry coaches(one in middle and one at the end) to private players. The lease can be for upto 5 years for each train. The lease cannot be renewed to same player in same train.

Also railways can allow private players to run their trains(goods and passenger) on some specific routes during some specific time period when no trains are running normally. This can be contract for some 15-20 years and railway can charge for infrastructure and other services.

Govt. Owned Malls for FMCG revenue generation • Convert railway station into malls in metro cities - Cities are crowded and current government resources can be converted to meaningful use and for constant revenue generation for govt. Use resources like railway stations to better use, have common govt owned corporation managing these malls and provide job opportunities for masses. Only thing to make sure is do not sale any resource to anybody just lease in open market and generate constant reven

By implementing the following point given below,i think revenue of Indian railways can reach to great heights.
1.Through the advertisement of various product and services(private) on the back side of the ticket.
2.Land utilization near the railway line.such as by growing fruits and vegetables trees.
3. Solar panel should be used in all railways stations, inspite of wasting uncountable watts of electricity.
4. Railways food system(in both stations or under railways coach)should be privatised.

Well this is the need of the hour. Looking for alternate source of revenue will not only fill the gap required to meet the futurisitic revenue but will also create various facilities & provide comfort for the traveller in times to come. This will also provide government with enough room to spend more on the safety aspect of the railway. Some of the alternative ways are wifi facility, calling facility etc...

Please go through how British government privatised its British Rail in the 1980s and 90s. It is available in detail in Wikipaedia. British Rail was very similar to the Indian Railways in many aspects. Monopolies like the Indian Railways are always bad for the customers and taxpayers.

India has 1,15,000 Km of Railway lines.
If we plant Fruit Trees & Vegetables on 20 Meters on each side of the Railway lines ( For just 50 % of total line length ), Railways can earn Rs 2,842 Crores of additional profit assuming an average profit of Rs 50,000 / Acre/ Year. Since this will be Executed as a PPP ( Public Private partnership ) scheme, It will create tens of thousands of New Entrepreneurs across India and approx. 2.27 Million New Jobs across India @ 4 New Jobs per acre.

I had a hotrible experience when i missed my train and had to board another train without ticket. I wish if there had been some platform to pay government fine in this case. But i had to rely on the interpretation of tte who gave me two options either 800 rs bribe or 1400 rs total fine. Even if i had to pay GOI 1000rs i would have done that happily. Hence i request to make paying railway fine , journey tickets for general etc online.
