Increasing non-fare revenue for Indian Railways

Start Date :
Jun 14, 2016
Last Date :
Jan 01, 2017
00:00 AM IST (GMT +5.30 Hrs)
Although Indian Railways enjoy the highest captive eyeballs in a railway system internationally, it earns less than 5% of its revenues through non-tariff sources. Many of the world ...
1. Invite KFC, CCD, McDonald and other fast food chains at all busy stations
2. Introduce Indian Railway FM channel
3. vacant land possessed by Indian Railway may converted to entertainment park, restaurants that will attract ad revenue
4. introduce souvenir items like old engines, coaches and T-shirt, cap with IR logo and make these items available at retail chains like Pantaloons
5. Publish monthly magazine with articles on places to see in India. Such magazine will attract lots of ads
Ticket verification must be like DMRC, so that corruption related to TT and other can be reduced.
1. For Sub-urban railway pass holders, send SMS alerts for pass expiry. The idea is not to miss even a day's revenue. Provide a link for Online renewal of pass in the SMS itself. The database of contacts of pass holders can become an effective way of communicating further commercial endeavours
2. For long route trains, people actually buy while journey is Bhel, Chats.. Either include them in menu or take commission from vendors
3. Food court at major station like CST, its there at churchgate
I have one solution for Indian Railway is: Like any other PSU Indian Railway must release IPO and must be listed into the share market. This will increase the investment in this Sector and quality as well as profit will improve.
First of all from school level learn children about how to use and maintain government resources. Also make the survey, from which route railway get more traffic and revenue train frequency should be increased or new trains should be started. Also give preference to local trains not only expresses as most of population used locals.
namastey sir
sir mera idea hai jaise metro me hota hai entry aur exist ke liye jo barrier bane hue hai thik waise hi agar railway me ban jaye toh bahut fayeda hoga..example ke bahut se log railway me safar karte aur unhe railway station ke platform tak chodne ke liye aate aur kabhi kabhi wo platform ticket liye bina hi chale jate islie agar hum entru aur exist level par yeh suvida ka istemal karte hai toh fayeda hoga aur yeh hamari security ke liye bhi sahi hoga.aur log bina ticket safar nhi
Improve the quality of food items, bring good restaurants services. I feel unhygienic to eat in food served in railways. Many people like me feel the same. Create an integrated environment( shopping malls, food courts, Cinemas, bus station a complete eco system). Now railway stations are in such a place we have take a cab and go to city. Or in very congested place. Make customers to feel comfortable and let them spend more time by offering various services.
The Open Spaces provided outside the Railway Stations, at many places illegal Slums have occupied these Spaces. Remove these Slums & lease these Space for Commercial use. Big Revenue & required Safety is automatically assured !
Some of my thoughts- 1) On short haul routes make chair cars, to maximize revenue (2) outsource food served in train to generate more revenues (3) LCD monitors in each compartment to generate ad revenue (4) paid wifi in trains (5) shops, business centers in stations to enhance revenue and passenger facility (6) business lounges in major stations for upperclass passengers (7) short term lodging facility in stations (8) paid underground long and short term parking in major junctions
Shopping malls / cineplex on stations: Since we allow non travellers on purchase of platform tickets converts the stations in to Shopping malls gaining rents and have special way for passengers to reach directly the trains ONLY before ( say 15 mts) Schedule departure time.
Travel light or pay for heavy baggage: A leaf out of airlines.
Book Taxis/Autos while travelling. Option to pay in the train itself. It will promote hassle free journey and pleasure after travel.
