Post offices can do better if they adopt better technology, do a bit more networking ando tie ups worldwide as done by many successful private players and adopt a bit more professional attitude towards work.
I have ecommerce business and we ship globally. Initially started with Indian postal services to save cost but the kind of services my business received forced me to switch over to professional foreign players just to get better qualitype service. Many long pending issues with Post office

Create warehouses to help farming community and link up with postal department(Communication/Delivery services). Help with digital pricing to farming community, let them decide where it should be delivered from home and so called Postal Dept take the lead to deliver. The Speed/right Information is mantra for better pricing. If it facilitates it who knows farming community or retailer is ready to share premium.

Bring relevance, change the name to Communication department, merge BSNL with it. Recruit energetic people. eCom is going to be big, have packages (shipment) for small/medium/big eretailers. Be aggressive in this space, may be SHGs can be roped in. Employees needs to be persuaded to understand the realities. Otherwise one day they would be disappearing.

courier companies are doing roaring business because of failure of the post office network and reasons for such failure are common thru all govt depts. High charges of money orders and delay in remittance lead to private bankers spreading their tentacles over rural folk. Post office network should be overhauled first for its original business and then one should think of utilizing it for other purposes. Otherwise only no of govt employees will increase along with its attendant perils.

Post offices can be effective network for food security. We need to get out of current system of low price shops for food distribution and use post office network to deliver food grains at home. Food grains should be packed in FCI facilities and directly delivered to consumer in need. In one stroke we'll eliminate corrupt network of food distribution and post offices will also get handsome returns. Win win for all; govt reaches to needy, people get food at home, quality and quatity is maintained

Post office has the largest and most reliable network across the country. They can start distributing utility bills for water and electricity, and collecting the payment for utility services. The e-retailers are suffering with delivery problems, and there is no network that can compete with Post Office network, and hence upgrading the IT management system of post office will boost services. Introduce e-printing of postal tickets.
