These draft standards are a huge step toward making transport inclusive for all. Beyond infrastructure, I recommend including mandatory training for drivers, conductors, and staff to assist persons with disabilities sensitively. Also, emergency evacuation procedures should cater specifically to persons with reduced mobility. “I appreciate the Ministry’s effort in seeking public input, and I hope these suggestions will contribute to a more inclusive transport system for India.”

Invitation for Public Comment on the Draft Accessibility Standard for the Transport and Mobility Sector By Vaishnavi Rawat Ensuring equal access to safe, reliable, and inclusive transportation is essential for building a just and equitable society. In every city, town, and rural area, people rely on transport to access education, healthcare, employment, and social opportunities. But for persons with disabilities, elderly individuals, and those with limited mobility, everyday travel can present a host of barriers—physical, informational, and attitudinal. In recognition of these challenges, I am pleased to share that we have developed a Draft Accessibility Standard for the Transport and Mobility Sector, and we are now inviting public comments, expert opinions, and thoughtful suggestions to help refine and finalize this important document. This standard has been prepared with the goal of creating a truly inclusive transport ecosystem—one where every individual can travel with independent.

Stair case climbing wheelchairs must be provided as mandatory measure, as many times aerobridge, ambulift, towable ramp is not available, while entering the plane and wheelchair bound are lifted by 4 portors and carried up the 20 odd steps of the plane. Commerciably available staie case climbing wheelchair could be a safer, comfortable way of facilitating entry of wheelchair bounds in the plane in the absence of aerobridge, ambulift and towable ramp
