The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment (MSJE), in collaboration with MyGov, invites comments and suggestions from stakeholders and the general public on the draft accessibility standards for the Transport & Mobility Sector. These draft standards, which identify non-negotiable rules, have been prepared to strengthen the creation of barrier-free environments in accordance with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 and relevant rules.

the transport sector has variousstandard to ensure safety,efficiency,and enviromental sustainability.like some key included vehicle safety standardit is regulation ofvehicle designmanufacturing and maintenance to minimize accidents and injuries.and limits on vehicle emmision to reduce air pollution and mitigate climate changes.guidlines for road design,signage and infrustructure to prevent accident standard for driver training , testing and licensing to ensure competent drivers. guidlines for designing.

Key Focus Areas for Accessibility in Transport & Mobility 1.Physical Accessibility A Vehicles:Include space for wheelchairs,priority seating,accessible signage,low-floor boarding,ramps/lifts. B.Infrastructure:Tactile paving, handrails,curb cuts,elevators/escalators with audio/visual alerts at stations and terminals. 2.Information Accessibility A.Multi-format communication:Provide announcements and instructions in audio, visual,and tactile formats. Real-time updates (arrival/departure,delays) should be screen-reader friendly and available in easy-to-read formats. Apps/web platforms must follow WCAG 2.2 standards. 3.Training for Transport Staff Mandatory disability awareness and inclusion training for all front-line and support staff. Emergency evacuation training with focus on assisting passengers with disabilities. 4.Affordable & Equitable Access A.Subsidized fares or free travel passes for people with disabilities. B.Special booking and assistance services online/offline.
