The youth of India are the torchbearers of tomorrow, fueling the nation’s growth with their creativity, skills, and innovative mindset. The participation of youth, in addition to the demographic division we enjoy, will be crucial as we gear up to emerge from the shadow of global pandemic repercussions to build an Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

The Hon’ble PM Shri Narendra Modi gave a new mantra to the youth last year - ‘Skill, Reskill and Upskill’ to remain relevant in the rapidly changing business environment and market conditions.

The passion of youth is celebrated around the world on July 15 in the form of World Youth Skills Day to stress the strategic importance of equipping youth with employment, quality work, and entrepreneurship skills.

The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship invites creative ideas and suggestions from the youth to propel India as the ‘Skill Capital’ of the world.

The last date to submit your entries is 17th September 2021.

Government and private sector collaboration key to addressing the skilling challenge: Acknowledging the formidable scale of this challenge, the government has initiated several measures with the corporate sector. For instance, as pronounced in Union Budget FY17, the move to set up 1,500 multi-skill training institutes under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) is commendable.

The last three months of the course are dedicated to on-the-job training. Apart from imparting technical knowledge and skills, trainees are also given lessons on professional skills. The challenges are uncommon. On one hand, Make-in-India needs highly skilled technicians who can work effectively, and with ease, in world-class manufacturing facilities. On the other hand, more than 5 million youth drop out of the education system every year. This section of the population has unfortunately not learnt any vocational skill, neither are they equipped to meet the requirements of the labour market. Moreover, India was once a land reputed for its quality and intricate craftsmanship.

To become a centre of modern manufacturing, India will need a large pool of skilled talent: Statistics speak for our disproportionate skilling challenge—it is estimated that 104 million youth will be in need of skilling by 2022.

It is no surprise that governments globally are focusing on the significant role vocational education and training plays in their countries’ futures. At a time when skills gap is a major concern globally, investing in skill development has never been so important.

Skill development starts with identifying future job prospects and segmenting it according to the need and feasibility of training candidates. The PPP model of operation of SSCs presents a great chance of bringing industry best practices in learning and development into such training modules. Private players can use technology to automate, improve and scale training and certification approach of skill-based training.

We are in the tradition of Bishnupriya Manipuri community, weaving cloth at home is a daily part of our women. But we are a backward community, so we are economically very immobile. If Hon'ble Prime Minister Modiji launches a special project to officially provide economic assistance to this ethnic group, then the tradition of this small ethnic group will remain intact and a blend of self-reliant India will be created in the country.
