Notwithstanding the current challenges, Indian steel industry has significant potential for growth The per capita steel consumption in India at 61 kg is much lower than the global average of 208 kg or that of other major steel producing countries. The planned investment in infrastructure sector, expansion of railways network, development of domestic shipbuilding industry, opening up of defence sector for private participation, anticipated growth in automobile and capital goods industry and the construction in urban & rural areas and the continued investment in Roads and Highways are expected to create significant domestic demand for steel. With GDP growth of 7.5% per annum till 2030-31, crude steel demand in the country is expected to increase to 120-125 MT by 2019-20, 155-165 MT by 2023-24, and 235-275 MT by 2030-31, requiring a significant increase in capacity and production of steel within the country.

Some of the measures identified by Ministry of Steel to boost Steel demand in near future are:

1) Rural sector:
The low per capita steel consumption in the rural sector of about 12 kg provides substantial scope for growth specifically under: Housing under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna, Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojna etc. can be brought to steel based platform
Rural housing targets to achieve 1 crore dwelling units in next 3 years and usage of steel based structures will provide huge impetus to the demand of Steel`
2) Urban sector:
Commercial and residential buildings and flyovers could be targeted.
“Housing for All” Mission by 2022 can directly contribute to pre-fab and precast mass affordable housing, which in turn will lead to higher consumption of steel.
Bridges, pavements and crash barriers used in Roads & Highways can be upgraded to steel bridges, steel reinforced pavements and steel crash barriers respectively.
3) Road, Highways & Bridges:
There are over 1 lakh bridges in the country and “conditions survey” is being conducted by Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) for rehabilitation/ reconstruction of 1500 road bridges. Further, 208 “Road over bridges” (ROBs) are identified for re-construction within the next 2 years by the Public Works Departments. Steel intensive bridges can be used in place of conventional RCC bridges, wherever possible because of cost advantage, quicker installation and longer life span.

4) Railways:
Usage of steel in railways is mainly limited to laying of railway tracks, rolling stocks, wagons and coaches. However, there is considerable scope of increasing steel usage in making railway station, foot over bridges, rail coaches, construction of steel based railway colony buildings especially in seismic prone areas, construction of dedicated freight corridors & superfast rail corridors and construction of more steel bridges for saving time & CAPEX.
Railways are shifting from overhead electrical setups to underground systems. The existing overhead poles & other fittings may be given to interested players in the steel sector for conversion to underground conduit pipes. Efforts will be made with Ministry of Railways to increase the usage of steel in Railways.

5) Defense, shipbuilding and other manufacturing sectors:
The “Make in India” initiative is expected to witness significant investment, which will stimulate steel demand. However, such benefit can only be passed on to the domestic steel producers if it is made mandatory for government funded/PPP projects in these sectors to source a part of their steel requirement from domestic producers.
Ministry of Steel is taking up with Ministry of Urban Development, Ministry of Rural Development and Ministry of Road Transport & Highways and other Ministries concerned and also with the State Governments to increase steel usage in rural and urban sector, especially in construction and infrastructure development.

All stakeholders concerned are therefore requested to submit their comments/ suggestions on MyGov by 30.11.2016.

Sir,
Government may consider to give incentives in real estate sector for building totally steel made mass residencies, encourage people in using steel made doors and movable residencies totally built of steel as they are relatively maintenance free and can be easily dismantled.

the power cost should be reduced. india has a disadvantage in this sector if compared to other growing countries. and the tax structure should be uniform in all states, making the end price cheaper. build operate transfer system can be given to private hands keeping the quality in mind. continuous power at cheaper rates can boost a lot to certain states like jharkhand as they have all the other natural resources present with them.bank interest rates should be uniform for different categor

Suggestion for increasing steel consumption. We should have large fabrication yards strategically located on the coast to fabricate, cast RCC Bridge girders for highways, railways. The raw materials like steel, cement, sand, granite should be available logistically in large quantities. Pvt companies could take up the work. There has to be standardized bridge spans for mass production. The finished product moved by ships and barges to the coastal cities.we have vast coast line and can save proj time.

In my view to increase steel demand we should install large stainless steel tanks all over the country to store food grains like we store petroleum products. The tanks should have facilities to flush nitrogen inert gas to increase storage life of food grains which is vital for the country. The present system of storage in bags for long periods leads to wastage and national loss. The steel used should be 100% produced in the country.

Sir, it is quite evident that common man is quite happy upon your effort to overcome black money and it is only some political parties who have looted the country creating chaos. Plz appoint some good speakers like Sambit Patra etc to present government views. Upon watching all channels it is evident that your vision is not getting presented in proper manner by these news channel and some spokespersons.

It is my fortune to share some measures to increase the steel demands. The measures can be either public or on ppp model:
a) Construction of cold-storage in each district/area/region as it will boost the storage of food for farmers, traders, businessmen, etc.
b) Integration of skill India mission with MSME & SME to set up manufacturing industries which will boost the demand of steel
c) Help the new entrepreneurs to promote their business by giving them subsidy especially in export sector

Respected sir,
I have proposed an idea for solving the black money exchange problem. All business corporation should declare holiday for two days and government officer by themselves want to visit each and every house and then register peoples 1000 and 500 rupees notes serial number along with their adhar number. Notes which are registered only can be exchanged and other currencies cannot be exchanged. You can also provide extra time for exchange.

My suggestion is to Survey and Test Old buildings may it be Government offices or Government quarters and older than 5O years and not structurally fit may be asked to rebuild. I would like to highlight that in Goa many Government run Schools, Colleges and even the only Engineering college run by government is very old and needs attention. Thus will increase the Steel demand and also create better infrastructure.

Every Highway, roads in city where busy vehicle traffic and people crossing are present build steel cross over bridges. The one advantage of this is when the bridge is old enough or the traffic dynamics change it is easy to dismantle also. Every city, town, Highway, railway stations in the country can have this cross over bridges where steel is required. Start consuming you steel ministry.

Today the Electricity boards are making concrete poles for transmission which get damaged and get replaced every few years and the contractors are benefiting from this. So start replacing this concrete poles with Steel poles like it used to be in the early days(my grandfather days). these pole do not get damaged or degrade easily. Savings for the nation in long time also less corruption with contractors few operating & maintenance costs.
