The brave freedom fighter
From Sikkim: Helen Lepcha Alias Sabitri Devi
Among the millions, inspired by the father of nation Mahatma Gandhi for a cause that was greater than one’s self; the cause that ultimately lead to freedom from the colonial shackles was Helen Lepcha alias Sabitri Devi, who volunteered to dedicate her life in the service of nation.
Born as the third child of Achung Lepcha among seven in the year 1902, Helen Lepcha was perhaps the only woman freedom fighter born in the State of Sikkim, the erstwhile princely kingdom. Though born in Sangmoo near Ravong, a village that lies 33 kms from district headquarter of Namchi under South Sikkim, her family had migrated to Kurseong in West Bengal in search of better avenues for education and employment.
In appreciation of her dedication and immense contribution to the freedom movement, the Government of India in the year 1972 honored her with a citation, a “Tamra Patra”.
Lakshmibai, the Rani of Jhansi, was an Indian queen, the Maharani consort of the Maratha princely state of Jhansi from 1843 to 1853 as the wife of Maharaja Gangadhar Rao. She was one of the leading figures of the Indian Rebellion of 1857 and became a symbol of resistance to the British Raj for Indian nationalists.
