India has been making steady progress in the field of sports, but it has potential to do much more. If right steps are taken towards development of sports culture, integration of sports and education, early spotting of talent, strong support to sportspersons through top-class coaching, competition exposures, sports science and sports medicine support, etc., India can emerge as a sports super power.

Views are invited on what specific steps need to be taken.

But we have some very encouraging reasons to believe that India can be a Sports Superpower. In Wrestling, we recently won, Cricket, we win a fair bit, Badminton, hockey.....we're winning there as well. Hopefully with our per capita GDP continuing to rise, as our national smart phone sales increase, making people more aware of our sports opps, interest will rise and people may be able to pursue such opportunities without having to worry about failure or lost opportunities? This can work.

...to compete for them?? But I think this is all changing as domestic regional leagues pick up in more sports. Not just Cricket, hockey, but now celebrity backed soccer. The more private money backed sports leagues that are created (even with imported talent, initially), Bollywood endorsed, televised and successfully run, the more interest will be created, hopefully more schools set up and then more talent to choose from? Why India doesn't play in the Soccer World Cup is disappointing.

I would love to see India become a Sports Superpower; at first I thought, maybe our per capita GDP and social safety nets need to rise more before our risk taking appetites at the household levels rise but African nations show us that with fewer resources they churn out athletes, possibly because there are no better opportunities. In India we're kinda stuck in the middle. Safety nets are too low to potentially pursue riskier careers or we have non-sport opportunities enough to incentivize us...

Make many 'Sports Complex' in all cities and semi urban areas were people can use facilities by paying reasonable monthly fees. The system should be similar to gym. 'Mini Sports Complex' should have all high end - world class equipment s and sports materials of all games to be used by members. If possible try to open as many as such centers so that aspiring children can use it after their school. Make all sports people who won medals as mentors of such place.

The Indian approach to life, and in particular physical activity, is different from that of the western countries. Yoga and its third step of Asana is a wonderful achievement. It is difficult to explain how sitting in Padmasana elevates. How can the Yoga techniques be applied to team sports like football? Team effort is a weak point of India. Remember Swami Vivekananda: "You Will Be Nearer To Heaven Through Football Than Through The Study Of The Gita". Let us develop Football Yoga.

We have to redesign our entire education system. If a student sits for 8 hours every day, how can be become a sportsman? that too when his body is growing fast...

I think all politicians must have a service profile like govt employees. There certain targets must be fixed. On the basis of which they may be given an all India rank also. The new planning Commission be asked to fix the goals as per the state setup. Mla and MP may present their report card to respective governors who may send with remarks to CM or PM

first of all sack all politicians from all benches of sports. and ban any politician from heading any sport bench. lot of sport is dying in India due to stupid politics and sorry to say even cricket reduced scripted to soap opera stuff. where is sports? sports shud be encouraged right from school level. sports is not just about about career field but it teaches us many things, team work, sportsmanship, patience, discipline many other things. and then only talent needs to identified and nurtured.

Body building sports are lagging behind and are not provided any favor and they lag behind as this is the sport which portrays the image of the nation as a stronger one. Power lifting and other related sports which are preferred in the west are overlooked in India that is why we are looked as a child nation. Strength and enduring sports should also focused upon equally as the performance of our countrymen in Olympics and other sports are worth mentioning. If state ownership is encouraged.

The first step in making India a sports superpower would be inviting other sports equal importance in comparison to cricket. It's not only cricket but other sports as well which increases stamina and improves the body. Yoga for example enhances the overall performance of the human being and the recognition of the world yoga day is a giant step. Equal importance to all sports and providing world class facilities to all sports will be beneficial to all sports and will be encouraging and booster.
