With the GST coming into effect from 1st July, 2017, the biggest indirect tax reform of independent India, is going to transform the way indirect tax is administered in this country, impacting not just businesses but also the common man. GST is a tax on consumption of goods and services, which is levied at all stages right from manufacturing up to final consumption, with credit of taxes paid at previous stages available as setoff. It is going to remove the tax-on-tax effect through separate Central and State tax laws. In a nutshell, under GST, only value addition will be taxed , hence, reducing the burden of tax to be borne by the final consumer.

The most fundamental change in GST besides the consolidation of multiple taxes, is the use of a robust shared IT infrastructure in its operations. All the forms related to registrations, filing returns and other related activities can now be done through the GSTN Portal.

GST will help build an economically stronger India, with 'One Nation, One Tax, One Market.'

Restaurants and Hotels:
Prior to GST were charging Vat and service tax.
Eg:Item X say thali or snacks @Rs.100 incl of tax.
After GST they bill for the same item at Rs.100 plus GST.
Thereby making superprofits.
Strong measures are required to catch this loot and ignorant common public and the govt is not cheated

There are still hotels and retailers who are charging exuberant prices by adding GST on top of the earlier price which had included tax. for example if the price of goods was Rs.10 with all taxes, now they have added 10+GST which is unfair practice. we need to have online complaints register against this guys. please provide channels for consumer to complaint against this kind of practice. GST is an excellent reform & I think all of us citizens will benefit in the long run. It is still early days but there are some provisions which I believe need to be re-explored. For e.g. currently all farmers are exempt from GST. However, if farmers sell their produce to an e-commerce store, GST is applied. This is harmful to the farmers as they will prefer a transparent eCommerce marketplace rather than the APMCs where they are being exploited for years. Need to review and revise.

Dear Sir/Madam
I'm from australia and planning my visit to india soon. As Gst is already in place in Australia hence like in australia, Is there any provision for NRI's or anybody leaving india, Can get their GST refunded back to them. As We are not obliged to pay any taxes in India but of course while making any purchase that will incur GST that should be refunded back. When leaving Australia, we can claim the gst if the receipt total amount is or over $300.
