Khadi is not merely a piece of cloth. It is a philosophy. A way of life. A symbol of empowerment, self-dependence, pride of history, Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of the relevance of roots.

As Hon’ble PM Narendra Modi on his radio program “Mann ki Baat” on 3rd October, 2014 said that “we must promote the use of Khadi and we should buy at least one Khadi article. If you buy Khadi, you light the lamp of prosperity in the house of the poor”.This appealled to an increase in Khadi sales by 125% at the various outlets in India. This reflects a latent demand for Khadi, which needs to tapped which in turn will create rural employment. Potential consumers of Khadi could be schools, hospitals, Railways, PSUs, Army, Para-military forces, Fashion houses etc.

USP of the Khadi product is its eco-friendly, almost carbon neutral nature, which leaves near zero water footprints. It is socio-economically sustainable textile product. It’s an all-weather and allergy free fabric. Hence, Khadi use is a step towards ‘Zero Effect’ and ‘Zero Poverty’ India.

Currently, people employed in Khadi sector are earning Rs.1200 to Rs.1800 per month. MGIRI Wardha has developed a Solar Charkha which can increase the earnings to four times the existing one, cutting the drudgery along.Taking the initiative forward, MoMSME is going to start a pilot project in the KHANWA village, Nawada district of Bihar, where 100 Solar Charkhas would be distributed to the rural women for spinning of yarn. Under buyback arrangement with ‘Gram Nirmaan Mandal, Khadi Sansthan, GAYA, these yarns would be weaved into Khadi products. This scheme islikely to provide Rs.5000 to 8000 per month to the women artisans. This model of wage earnings to the rural women has to be scaled up so as to achieve the visionary goal of providing job opportunities to crores of rural women in coming years.

This, in turn is expected to lay a platform for another visionary goal of increasing the market share of Khadi in the textile sector from present 0.4% to 5% in next Five years in first phase.

In pursuance of the above twin visionary goals, you are requested to give your valuable inputs on

1. How to enhance the production and sale of Khadi?
2. How to create a niche for Khadi products particularly among youths and about 2.5 crore NRIs living abroad?
3. How to foster awareness about Khadi products?

The last date for submission of your comments is 31st March, 2015.

As a 1st step, need to identify the khadi market to rural women employment through khadi. One of my suggestion would be the uniform(Khadi) for school children. If the schools adopts uniform(Khadi) for children it will create huge demand for the khadi and employment for the women.

The marketing should be based on making Khadi hip and cool for the young generation. As of now it is associated with the serious, mature people. Khadi tops for girls as kurtis over jeans and as salwar kameez and for young boys as a Top over their favorite Jeans or for special occassions. There should be bold color of red, yellow , blue to appeal to the young generation. It can be promoted through Prime Time Television Serials, Movies and Celebrity Endorsements.

I have seen, most of the gov projects are excersized to earn money by the contractors or the gov employees. This mindset has to be changed first, to became project success. At the present there are many unsuccessful projects for women. Rural women employment through khadi can became successful not only but others also 1. Survey the area where this project can be implemented 2. Search the market availability for khadi products 3. Design products according to the market

We are talking of Equality and Citizens Rights and forget what and how we behave towards the Feminine Gendre. Gendre Bias needs to be removed. This can happen only when we educate the people who are against the view that Girls and Women should be given equal opportunity in every sphere of life.

Today is World Women's Day. We all should take a pledge to respect the Women in our daily routine of life.It is very disturbing to learn that news like Rape , Killing of Baby Girl Child is taking place in one corner of the country or other. We should realise had there been No Girl/Women we would also not have been born to discuss on such issues. My appeal to all of you is " We should start respecting and liking our Feminine Gender".

Following few suggestions would help uplifting Rural Khadi Industry (1) All Khadi units / houses in India must be integrated / connected through computers (2) All State governments & Central government should issue coupons equivalent 2% of their employees and deduct the said amount from their salaries (3) These employees and redeem these coupons in any of the handloom house across India (4) Employees would not mind to take 2% of their salary as coupons in National Interest

Sirji, There's a need to improve the availability & accessibility of Khadi, be it in rural or elsewhere. If economics do not make it viable to have a separate shop or outlet, Govts. can think of out letting a small area of post offices located all over. Rural women can be encouraged to market/sell the khadi products from there. In case of better results & market, later on, agencies can think of having own shops/oultets to promote & sell khadi products. If not P.O., try panchayat office area.
