I was astonished to hear how the prices of flats and apartments have sky rocketed in Newtown and Rajarhat over the last years. I live in South Kolkata, near Thakurpukur. It was not till I visited the 'smart city' that I realised the reason behind this. Free wi-fi, eco-park, city centre, it is definitely a great place to live!

The area around Pride Hotel in New Town doesn’t have proper traffic management. While I see the police doing their duty, yet it is a little difficult to cross the roads. Moreover the buses don’t stop at a given point while going towards Salt Lake. While this isn’t a frequent thing, yet occurring a few times can hamper travelling.

New Town should be able to provide a lot of employment opportunities along with other advantages. I believe in this approach to make our New Town a smart city, there will be more manpower required, thus increasing the scope of employment.

Access to internet without any glitch, Wi-Fi facility, getting easy access to data about the place, etc. are some facilities that I believe we should have. After all a smart city should have better technical structure that gives us a lot of advantages.

We must have garbage bins in different parts of Salt Lake and New Town. While the initiative should come from us to keep our surroundings clean, it is important to these bins where we can dump any waste paper or used food cans. Carrying the waste things to home isn’t so desirable.

It is important to have a good infrastructure in order to make our New Town a smart city. Water and sanitation services with 24 x 7 electricity supply are the basic things we require.

We can have groups like eco-friendly clubs that will help to keep Rajarhat and Salt Lake clean. The members of these clubs will arrange for seminars, group sessions, contests, etc. to help people to contribute towards a cleaner surrounding.
