Surat Municipal Corporation has prepared draft Smart City Proposal (SCP) as per the guideline of Smart City Mission given by MoUD, Govt. of India. Based on opinion/feedback received during Citizen’s Engagement Round - 1 and Round - 2, Smart City Proposal (Draft) for Surat city includes

1. PAN City proposal based on Smart Solutions for “Transportation-Mobility-Connectivity” in entire city area and;
2. Area based development: Smart solutions in various sectors as“Retrofitting” is selected for 112.28 sq.km.area of Surat city prior to city limit extension in year 2006.

Surat is selected as the first smart IT city in India which is being constituted by the Microsoft CityNext Initiative tied up with IT services majors Tata Consultancy Services and Wipro.The city has 2.97 million internet users which is about 65% of total population.

The city registered an annualised GDP growth rate of 11.5 per cent over the seven fiscal years between 2001 and 2008.Surat was awarded "best city" by the Annual Survey of India's City-Systems (ASICS) in 2013

Surat city is connected with major ports and docks. it has connected with major industries in hazira area on the river banks of tapi.
