With globalization and liberalization of Indian Economy in last two decades, numerous domestic and international companies have been drawn to investing in new modes of business/ business models targeted at the huge domestic market especially in the consumer goods & services. Direct Selling is one of these modes where goods /services are sold directly by the producer/service provider to the consumers. For this different models such as Multi Level/Network marketing, Door to Door Selling, Online Selling, Tele-shopping are being used. These practices are new and different from traditional retail through shops. In the absence of a proper regulatory framework, retail through these models leads to consumer grievances, trader’s issues, slow growth of the sector etc.

The aim of this discussion is to deliberate and evolve views of all stakeholders for providing a regulatory framework to the sector.

When IRDA has acknowledged that some private Banks had been mis-selling Insurance Plans to un-suspecting customers through their staff and their agents, why Govt. is not proceeding against them. HDFC's Life Saving Assurance Policy is one against which many investors have posted their grievances that they were duped. The Government should ask HDFC Bank to return to the investors their investments plus declared bonuses on close of the three years's period of the Plan as assured.

Population control is mandatory. It is very hard for our country to provide all the facilities equally to everyone. Online shopping has more merits like monopoly act of sellers can be reduced and you also can get the unique price across the country for all the products. Also buying something from a different state which is not available in a particular state is possible by Online trade. Also used products are available for sale only online and can be purchased without spending for new one.
