About three years back, aggrieved that we appeared to be helpless against the demur on the part of the American company in supplying engines for our Tejas fighter jet, I had posted my disappointment with the Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) for its failure to develop an indigenous jet engine in spite of working on it since 1982. On 23 May 2024, the Ministry of Defence awarded a private Indian firm a contract to serve as a single source industry partner of the revamped GTRE for the Advanced Turbo Gas Generator (ATGG) engines for powering the Naval Anti-Ship Missile–Medium Range. The first such engine already has been delivered on 22 July 2026. And now, the GTRE with private participation has crossed the research stage and is going for actual manufacturing of not only the Tejas-engine but also the substantially more powerful engine for the indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft. We are proud to see unleashed Indian talent making Bharat Atmanirbhar.
