The Fit India Movement was launched by the Hon'ble Prime Minister on 29 August 2019 with the vision of ‘Hum Fit Toh India Fit’ and the message ‘Fitness ki Dose, Aadha Ghanta Roz’, to make fitness an integral part of everyday life. Over the years, the Movement has expanded its public outreach through flagship campaigns such as National Sports Day, Fit India Carnival, and Sundays on Cycle.

The Fit India School Certification Program is an initiative under the Fit India Movement, launched with the objective of making physical fitness an essential and everyday part of school life rather than an occasional or event-based activity. The program derives its statutory basis from the Gazette Notification and Operational Guidelines of the revised Khelo India Scheme (KIS), which formally provides for a school-level fitness certification mechanism.

This concept note presents the proposed new design of the Fit India School Certification Programme and invites inputs and suggestions from schools, teachers, parents, education administrators, sports bodies, and other stakeholders. The Programme seeks to build a strong, continuing relationship between Fit India and schools by promoting fitness among students, teachers, and staff. It recognises schools that provide regular physical activity and sports opportunities and gives parents a transparent, reliable reference for making informed school choices.

The underlying policy premise is that the school is the first formal institution after home where fitness habits can be systematically taught, practiced, and reinforced in a child's life.

Multi-Tiered Framework and Standardized Re-EvaluationIntegrating the Fit India School Certification into the revised Khelo India Scheme (KIS) is a progressive step toward institutionalizing health. To maximize long-term impact, the government should replace the static certification model with a dynamic, multi-tiered rating structure (e.g., Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum). Rather than treating fitness as a one-time achievement, schools must undergo annual re-evaluations to ensure continuous compliance. The scoring framework must evaluate daily mandatory time blocks for physical activity, active tracking of student health growth over time, and progress badges to encourage healthy institutional competition.Infrastructure Inclusivity and Rural AccessibilityThe framework must address the stark infrastructural disparities between urban elite schools and resource-constrained rural institutions. Thank you

A truly “Fit India” should begin with schools where students are not only taught about fitness but are also given the time, space and encouragement to practise it. If schools create such an environment, the programme will achieve something more meaningful than certificates: it will help create a generation that understands that physical health is not an occasional goal, but a lifelong habit. Fitness should become part of school culture, so that students grow into healthier, more confident and responsible adults. It should be something students experience every day, not something they merely hear about.

One change I would strongly recommend is allowing students to play during their breaks. In many schools, break time is mostly spent sitting in classrooms, eating lunch or talking with friends. While these activities are important, students should also have the choice to go outside and use the school ground. Even fifteen or thirty minutes of active play can make a difference. Students could play football, basketball, badminton, volleyball or cricket, or simply walk, run and play with their friends. It does not always have to be organised or competitive. Sometimes, simply giving students the freedom and space to move and have fun is enough.Schools should therefore make playgrounds accessible during suitable breaks, with proper supervision and safety arrangements. A playground should not be considered a place that can only be used during a scheduled Physical Education period. It should be an important part of the school environment.

The Fit India Movement, launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister on 29 August 2019, has an important and meaningful objective: making fitness a part of everyday life rather than something people think about only during sports events or competitions. I strongly support the proposed Fit India School Certification Programme because schools play a major role in shaping the habits, attitudes and lifestyles of students. However, for this programme to truly succeed, fitness should not be limited to certificates, fitness tests or occasional activities. It should become a natural and enjoyable part of everyday school life.School is one of the first places where children learn habits that can continue into adulthood. Therefore, schools are an ideal environment for developing an active and healthy lifestyle. Fitness should not be treated as another burden for students who already have academics, examinations, projects and extracurricular activities. Instead, schools should create an environment .

Subject: Detailed Feedback, Inputs, and Strategic Recommendations on the Fit India Certification and Public Fitness Initiatives The Fit India Movement stands as one of the most transformative public health campaigns launched in recent history, effectively shifting the national conversation from reactive healthcare to proactive wellness. At the core of this movement lies the Fit India Certification system, a visionary institutional framework designed to grade and motivate schools, colleges, and workplaces to elevate their physical education and health infrastructure. By establishing a structured ranking system, this initiative has successfully gamified wellness, encouraging institutions to compete healthily in providing top-tier sports facilities, structured physical training periods, and inclusive fitness routines. Parallel to this institutional anchoring are the vibrant, community-led public events that bring the spirit of fitness directly to the streets. Aditya Kumar Yadav

I like the proposed framework, particularly the achievable 3-Star and aspirational 5-Star structure. My concern is whether recognition alone is sufficient to motivate voluntary participation by schools. I suggest strengthening incentives: certified schools could receive grants/rebates for sports infrastructure, while participating students could receive recognition, scholarships or exposure visits to SAI/Khelo India facilities. Fit India ratings could also be aligned with relevant NABET/QCI accreditation parameters. For 5-Star schools, consider monthly parent-led activities, partnerships with local sports clubs, and short “active breaks” during regular classes, with participating teachers receiving appropriate credit. PE teachers should also receive periodic in-person SAI training. Finally, periodic digital compliance reporting and a nationwide public participation campaign could help turn Fit India from a certification exercise into a culture of everyday fitness.

Fit India School Certification is a great step to make fitness a daily habit, not just an event. Suggestions: 1. Allow flexibility - schools without ground should also get credit for yoga, dance, indoor games. 2. Add monitoring - random audits + student/parent feedback so it’s not only on paper. 3. Include all students - separate criteria for children with special needs. 4. Train teachers - certified PE instructors for quality 30 min daily. 5. Give levels - Gold/Silver/Bronze certification to create healthy competition. Core focus should be Consistency over Competition. If implemented well, this will build a fit generation and help parents choose schools transparently. Hum Fit Toh India Fit.

Feedback on Fit India Certification The Fit India Certification is an excellent initiative to make schools more focused on fitness, sports and healthy lifestyles. The certification could consider: 🏃 Daily physical activity and exercise 🏅 Participation in sports and fitness activities 🧘 Yoga, stretching and mental well-being 🥗 Awareness of healthy food and lifestyle habits ♿ Inclusive activities for students of different abilities 👩‍🏫 Trained teachers and proper sports facilities 📊 Regular fitness assessments and improvement 🌱 Clean, safe and active school surroundings The assessment should be simple, practical, affordable and improvement-based, so that every school and student gets an equal opportunity to participate.
