The Fit India Movement was launched by the Hon'ble Prime Minister on 29 August 2019 with the vision of ‘Hum Fit Toh India Fit’ and the message ‘Fitness ki Dose, Aadha Ghanta Roz’, to make fitness an integral part of everyday life. Over the years, the Movement has expanded its public outreach through flagship campaigns such as National Sports Day, Fit India Carnival, and Sundays on Cycle.

The Fit India School Certification Program is an initiative under the Fit India Movement, launched with the objective of making physical fitness an essential and everyday part of school life rather than an occasional or event-based activity. The program derives its statutory basis from the Gazette Notification and Operational Guidelines of the revised Khelo India Scheme (KIS), which formally provides for a school-level fitness certification mechanism.

This concept note presents the proposed new design of the Fit India School Certification Programme and invites inputs and suggestions from schools, teachers, parents, education administrators, sports bodies, and other stakeholders. The Programme seeks to build a strong, continuing relationship between Fit India and schools by promoting fitness among students, teachers, and staff. It recognises schools that provide regular physical activity and sports opportunities and gives parents a transparent, reliable reference for making informed school choices.

The underlying policy premise is that the school is the first formal institution after home where fitness habits can be systematically taught, practiced, and reinforced in a child's life.

My name is Priyanshi, and today I want to share my real point of view on the Fit India Movement. This is not just a scripted speech or something taken from somewhere else. These are thoughts that I genuinely believe in and have observed around me.

The proposed Fit India School Certification Programme is a progressive step towards making fitness a daily habit rather than an occasional activity. Along with physical fitness, the certification should encourage schools to adopt a holistic wellness approach by including mental well-being, nutrition awareness, yoga, and healthy lifestyle education. A simple digital dashboard where schools can track fitness activities, participation, and annual progress would make implementation transparent and encourage continuous improvement. The framework should also recognise inclusive practices by ensuring equal participation of girls, children with disabilities, and students from rural and urban schools. Parents and teachers should be actively involved through monthly fitness events, creating a culture of wellness beyond the classroom.

The Fit India Certification concept is a very positive initiative that can encourage people and institutions to adopt a healthier lifestyle. The certification framework is well-structured and promotes awareness about fitness, physical activity, and overall well-being. However, the process should be kept simple and accessible so that schools, colleges, workplaces, and rural communities can participate without difficulty. Regular awareness campaigns, clear guidelines, and practical evaluation methods will make the program more effective. Including mental health, nutrition, and everyday physical activities along with sports would make the certification more holistic. Overall, this initiative has the potential to build a healthier and more fitness-conscious India.

Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya took charge as the Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports on June 11, 2024. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports oversees two departments: the Department of Youth Affairs and the Department of Sports. It is responsible for the development and promotion of youth initiatives and sports in the country, with a focus on providing infrastructure, training, and programs to foster the growth of youth and sports. Department of Youth Affairs The Department pursues the twin objectives of personality building and nation building, i.e. developing the personality of youth and involving them in various nation-building activities. Department of Sports The promotion of sports is primarily the responsibility of various autonomous National Sports Federations.

I appreciate the effort to redesign the Fit India School Certification Programme. Making fitness a regular part of school life, instead of limiting it to annual sports events, is a positive step that can help children develop healthy habits from an early age. The programme should encourage participation by every student, regardless of their physical ability, and focus on overall well-being rather than just performance. Including yoga, mental wellness, and simple daily physical activities alongside sports would make the initiative more holistic. It would also be helpful if the certification process is transparent, easy for schools to follow, and supported by a simple digital system. Encouraging teachers and parents to take part in fitness activities can further strengthen the programme and create a lasting culture of health and active living.

I truly believe that many in Gen Z might not realize this, but as a sportswoman, I know that being physically strong helps in any situation. Facing problems independently is very important, and staying physically fit makes that possible. I strongly suggest that all young women and men make physical fitness a priority throughout their studies. I want to urge parents to raise their children with a strong focus on both physical and mental fitness.
