The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs is the apex authority of the Government of India at the national level for formulating policies, sponsoring and supporting programmes, coordinating the activities of various Central Ministries, State Governments, and other nodal agencies, and monitoring initiatives related to urban development, employment, poverty alleviation, and housing across the country.

The Ministry envisions equitable, inclusive, and sustainable urban growth, fostering cities and towns that are slum-free, citizen-centric, and environmentally responsible. It strives to ensure adequate and affordable housing, access to productive employment opportunities, dignity, and an improved quality of life for all residents, particularly the urban poor.

The Ministry formulates and implements policies and programmes relating to urban development, housing, sanitation, urban transport, and smart cities, with the objective of promoting sustainable and inclusive urban transformation.
