# CONCEPT NOTE — “THE CONNECTING THREAD”
### Concept
The mascot is inspired by the simplest yet most powerful symbol of connection — **a thread**.
A thread has the ability to join two separate pieces, repair what is torn, strengthen what is weak, and maintain the integrity of something larger than itself. In the same way, NHAI creates and maintains the connections that keep India moving.
The mascot takes the form of a **friendly, expressive thread with a human-like face**, transforming an ordinary material into a living representation of India's highway network.
### The Thread as NHAI
The character represents more than a physical road. Its continuous body becomes a metaphor for the **continuous network of movement, service and connectivity across India**.
It connects:
**Person → Person**
**Family → Family**
**City → City**
**State → State**
**Business → Market**
**Truck → Supply Chain**
**Ambulance → Emergency**
**Police & Fire Services → People in Need**
Wherever there is a gap, the thread connects it.
Wherever there is damage, the thread repairs it.
Wherever there is a journey, the thread helps carry it forward.
### CONNECTIVITY
Just as a single thread can join two pieces of fabric, NHAI connects people, communities, cities, states and economic centres through India's highway network.
The mascot's continuous form visually represents this **unbroken chain of connectivity**.
### MAINTENANCE
A thread does not only create a connection; it can also **repair and preserve** one.
This represents NHAI's role in maintaining and improving highway infrastructure so that existing connections remain safe, reliable and functional.
The mascot can therefore be shown stitching cracks, repairing broken road sections or strengthening weak connections.
### SPEED & MOVEMENT
A thread can travel in a continuous flowing line without interruption. This becomes a visual metaphor for **smooth and efficient movement**.
The mascot's dynamic poses, flowing body and extended thread can communicate speed, mobility and the uninterrupted movement of people and goods across India.
### EMERGENCY CONNECTIVITY
Some connections become critical in moments of crisis.
The mascot represents the highway as a lifeline connecting:
**Ambulances → hospitals**
**Police → emergency locations**
**Fire brigades → people in danger**
Its role is to ensure that help can reach where it is needed, when it is needed.
### THE TRUCKING NETWORK
One of the most important invisible connections created by highways is India's **freight and logistics network**.
The thread therefore also represents the movement of trucks, goods, raw materials and supplies between manufacturers, markets, cities, ports and consumers.
In this sense:
> **The thread doesn't just connect places — it keeps India's economy moving.**
### FACILITIES & JOURNEY
NHAI's responsibility extends beyond simply providing a road. The mascot can represent the facilities, services and infrastructure that make long-distance journeys more comfortable, accessible and dependable.
The character therefore becomes a **companion to the traveller**, rather than simply a symbol of construction.
### PERSONALITY
The mascot is designed as:
* **Connected** — always bringing things together
* **Helpful** — ready to assist
* **Reliable** — always there when needed
* **Energetic** — constantly moving
* **Protective** — prioritising safe journeys
* **Resilient** — repairing and strengthening connections
* **Inclusive** — connecting everyone
* **Forward-looking** — helping India progress
### VISUAL LANGUAGE
The body is constructed from a **continuous thread**, creating a distinctive silhouette that can be recognised even without the NHAI name.
The thread can subtly incorporate:
* highway lane markings
* road curves
* stitches
* junctions
* bridges
* network branches
* Indian tricolour accents
This allows the mascot to transition naturally between **thread → stitch → road → network**.
### THE CORE IDEA
The mascot can ultimately be summed up in one thought:
> **“One thread. Millions of connections.”**
It represents the idea that behind every journey is a network of connections — connecting a person to another person, a family to another family, an emergency service to someone in need, a truck to its destination, and a business to the rest of the country.
**NHAI becomes the thread that keeps these connections strong, maintained and moving forward.**

Meet Pebbi.
The name Pebbi comes directly from the mascot’s pebble-inspired body. I wanted the name to feel as simple, friendly, and approachable as the character itself. Pebbi represents the idea that even something small and grounded can grow, transform, and rise. Its rounded seed-pebble-inspired body symbolizes resilience, stability, and the strong foundation from which every journey begins. The subtle natural texture and fine cracks represent experiences and challenges—not as weaknesses, but as part of the journey that shapes growth.
Growing from Pebbi's head is a two-leaf Ashoka sprout, inspired by Indian ecology. It symbolizes renewal, hope, and new beginnings, while also giving the character a connection to India's natural heritage.
Pebbi's translucent butterfly-inspired wings symbolize movement, transformation, and freedom. The flowing colours represent the diversity and vibrancy of India's landscapes, while the delicate golden veins and firefly-like glow symbolize guidance—like a small light helping travellers find their way.
Its tiny feet keep Pebbi connected to the ground, representing the roads and highways where every journey begins.
Together, its grounded body and wings express the balance between a strong foundation and the ambition to move forward. For NHAI, Pebbi becomes a friendly symbol of safe journeys, connectivity, progress, and movement—bringing a sense of warmth and companionship to the people travelling across India's highways. Pebbi — Grounded in Strength. Growing with India. Moving Forward Together.
