The major issue of post harvest is the logistics problems at farmers place/govt godowns/FCI and NO BETTER cold storage at major district or at railway stations. Solutions: construct cold storage go downs at Major Railway stations/ Bus stations. Have bogeys 2-3 in all passenger trains (inter city) e.g. Bangalore-Tumkur, Pune-Mumbai etc. This reduces loss of perishable items as major items currently transported thru Road Ways. This will help farmers and also quality veg & fruits for people

SCM is a area where govt. needs to loop in private players for build storage solutions which helps and garner support required for farmers to reduce post-harvest losses. All our farming community irrespective of size they farm in needs to have access to high tech modern facilities for temperature controlled facilities in every district OR better at mandal level, so crop which is sold or to be kept for storage needs to be taken careGovt. needto give rebates for these pvt. players for this intia

This is primarily supply chain optimization challenge. If we cannot measure it, we cannot improve it. A national number, where each farmer can send SMS with produce name, and volume, for monitoring geo coded output across the nation. this will help understand the variations and then plan for low total cost storage technology, and maximal flow networks, to reduce waste to within 3.4 KG per 1000 Metric Tonnes ( Six Sigma ). this would definitely mean, regulating the supply chain players.

The question of storing food grains can also be solved by using Railway wagons which has good storing capacity. I feel that instead of building very big storage capacity at one particular location, Railway Wagons can be used for storage and they can be moved to different locations where need arises.

If the weather forecast is for rain or hail Strom, then food product can be transferred to a safer location. Practically every town in India has a railway network in vicinity of 20kms. this is the best way to protect and reduce the post-harvest losses. All farmers can come and sell their produce at nearest railway station and railway can transfer the food product to different locations within 72 hrs. this action can reduce lot of intermediate steps.

In my opinion using Railways is a good way to reduce post-harvest losses. Today Railways has the largest network in India and can transport food products from one place to another at minimal cost. Railways can offer cold storages for perishable goods and storage facility in form of goods train. by using railways for transferring food products the transit time and cost of storage can be reduced drastically.
